The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure and beginner friendly. We have posted the full instructions below for you to view for free.
If you have been following our blog this year, you probably know that we design and crochet a lot of tops. But every year, typically around the holiday season we always crochet at least one scarf. Scarves make amazing, beautiful home made gifts that people always treasure. We love how they are one size fits all and easy to wear because they completely change an outfit from boring to … not.
This year we were shopping in a department store when we we were drawn to a beautiful display of solid earth coloured scarves. It was a stunning palette of dark green, yellow ochre, navy blue, deep red and brown. They were selling for around $70 each and to be really honest 🙂 … they looked just like the Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf – without the little white frill.
We have never crocheted a scarf from length to length (typically it has been width to width) – and we almost feel this design is TOO easy and TOO simple to post. But we just love the end result, especially how modern and basic it is, and thought maybe you would too.
We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.
So if you are looking to crochet something up in a day, or if you need a super fast holiday gift (without paying $70), The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf is the design for you. Here is how we plan to style it to give us a festive feel and you can find the pattern for the Happy Holidays Easy Red Crochet Cardigan here.
We used one of our favourite yarns from Lion Brand Yarn but as this is a made to measure pattern you can select your own yarn and you don’t need to worry about gauge. It’s a great stash buster too, so use this pattern to crochet up those scrap skeins lying around.

Yarn brand: Heartland by Lion Brand Yarn. Weight 4/Medium/Worsted. 142g per skein and 251 yards (or 230m) per skein.
We used the colour Rocky Mountains for our version of The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf.
You can also purchase Heartland by Lion Brand Yarn here on Amazon.
Approximately 2.2 skeins or 317 grams and 552 yards (or 506 metres) used for Kiks + Jacks version with a finished width of approximately 9 inches and a finished length of 54 inches.
Note we also used Coboo by Lion Brand Yarn to trim the scarf. We wanted something lighter and with more drape than Heartland for the trim.
5mm crochet hook (US size 8). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We also love the slightly more pricey crochet hooks from Clover Crochet Hooks and the beautiful Furls Crochet Hooks (these are so stunning, we just love looking at them!)
Yarn Winder!!! (Our new LOVE). We have held off on a yarn winder for a long time. We love the idea of crochet being simple with just a hook and some yarn. However we decided to get this yarn winder, because it was affordable and we weren’t sure about investing in a super fancy one yet. We love it because it breathes life back into scrappy yarn lying around that looks messy. It’s simple to use and is holding up really well for us.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION for The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf
The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf is made by crocheting a foundation chain the size of your desired length. You will then simply crochet half double crochets from length to length to create the ribbed texture. Kiks + Jack added a simple frilled contrast edging to the scarf.
Instructions are provided as to how to add tassels or turn this into an infinity scarf.
This is a beginner friendly made to measure pattern that can accommodate for different gauges.

Crochet Pattern Instructions for The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf
Calculate the desired length of the scarf. You may want to use the length of a scarf that you currently own and love or use the guide below:
Short scarves: typically around 50 – 55 inches
Medium scarves: typically around 70 inches
Long scarves: typically around 82 inches
For our version of The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf we used a short scarf of approximately 54 inches. We do love super long scarves and would have taken it up to 75 inches, however it can create a lot of bulk if you want to wrap it tight around your neck. As we wanted to show this crochet scarf with the Holiday Red Cardigan we kept it shorter.
Chain a number of stitches equal to your desired length.
For Kiks + Jack Crochet’s version we chained a length of approximately 54 inches.
Row 1: ch2, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across until end. Turn
Row 2: ch2, hdc BLO in each st across. Turn
Repeat row 2 until you achieve the desired width.
Fasten off.
For our version of The Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf we used a width of 9 inches. Note that if you are adding a trim around the scarf it can add a little more width to your scarf depending on your gauge and design.
Block your Quick and Easy Basic Crochet Scarf
Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your scarf. Blocking your scarf will set the panel to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look.
We block our scarf by pinning it to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely dry.
Crochet an Optional Trim
We wanted to add a contrasting crochet trim to one side of the scarf. We changed our yarn to a slightly thinner yarn (Coboo Yarn is a weight 3) and a smaller hook size (US 4). We wanted our edge to be a little more drapey and thinner than the main panel. Also we only added the trim to one side, as we tend to wrap our scarves tighter around our neck and prefer less bulk. However if you would prefer you could add it to the entire border of your scarf.
Attach your yarn to one side of the scarf on the long side.
Row 1: ch1, sc into 1st st, *ch3, sc into next st, rep from * until the end of the row.
Fasten off
Infinity Scarf Option and Tassels Option
Infinity Scarf Option: Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the two ends together. You could also crochet the two ends together using a slip stitch. Generally we like our infinity scarf to be wrapped twice and up close around our neck.
Tassels Option: If you are planning to use your scarf with the ends hanging down, you may want to add tassels (we generally keep them off, when we keep the scarf wrapped tight around our neck). There are many ways to attach tassels to your scarf, however here is one easy method:
(i) Calculate how long you would like your tassels (eg. 4 inches). Double this number (ie. 8 inches)
(ii) Cut yarn that is equal to double your desired tassel length (ie. 8 inches). You can used a hard piece of card and wrap yarn around it multiple times to speed up this process.
(iii) Take a few strands (check the desired thickness of each tassel), fold them in half and twist the end to form a loop. Insert loop first through one of the holes/gaps at the end of your scarf and pull the ends through the loop and tighten.
(iv) Repeat step (iii) so that you have even tassels along the base of your scarf.
(v) Trim your tassels if required to ensure they are even.
