You can probably tell that we love to design and crochet sweaters, cardigans and tops. It’s not hard when you scan the number of free crochet garment patterns on our blog that fit in this category.
However this week, we needed to crochet a gift FAST and let’s face it – as easy as our crocheted sweaters, cardigans and tops are, you still need a certain amount of time to get them completed. So whenever we need a beautiful handmade gift quickly, we turn to a crocheted scarf…. and when we do here are our typical requirements:
Fast stitch (because we need it fast).
Clustered stitch (so it’s even faster).
Brightly coloured (so it’s unique and something that would be difficult to purchase from a big box store).
Self striping (so we stay interested and crochet it to completion …. fast)
So after a day of crocheting we completed the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf. We love the simplicity of this crocheted piece and how it turned out. We also love how our gift recipient can wear it to instantly cheer up an outfit or make an outfit more festive! We typically crochet our scarves oversized and blanket-like, however we are loving this skinnier version styled over a crochet top and we are wanting one for ourselves now 🙂
If you have more than a day, then add some tassels at the bottom, make it wider, possibly add pockets to it and add trim on the edge! However we literally had a day so we left that all out as we had a timeline (and a budget) – think last minute Secret Santa gift!
The great thing is that we gave it to a non crocheter/non knitter who:
(i) sees stripes – “wow that is a lot of work to change those colours” – and doesn’t realize the beauty, ease and practicality of self striping yarn.
(ii) sees a complicated crochet pattern – “wow it looks like lace!!” – and doesn’t realize that this is a super easy, super fast stitch that uses the basic double crochet!
(iii) sees hand made with love….well this part is true….there is a lot of love put into every crocheted gift.
For this scarf we used Facets by Loops & Threads. We find that every garment we make with this yarn looks stunning. The colours fall out in a beautiful bright ombre style and the yarn is super soft to touch. The only thing to consider is that it is hard to frog this yarn. The good thing is that this pattern is so simple and once you get the stitch pattern you should hopefully be going forward with not a lot of frogging backwards!
Alternatively you can use any yarn as this is a made to measure pattern.

The Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf is a beautiful scarf that uses a quick and simple shell stitch primarily made up from double crochets. We used a larger hook size that allows for faster stitching and keeps the overall look pretty and lace like. We also show you options you can take to customize your scarf with tassels, width and edging.
The Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf is a free and easy crochet pattern available as a size inclusive made to measure pattern. It is a beginner friendly crochet pattern.
CROCHET GAUGE
Using a hook size 6 (US size 10), approximately 14 double crochet across and 8 rows of double crochet in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).
Note the pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However if you are new to crochet, you may want to select a yarn with a similar gauge to this version.
CROCHET MATERIALS for the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf

Yarn brand: Facets by Loops & Threads. Weight 4/Worsted/Medium. 100g per skein and 279 yards (or 256 m) per skein.
Another great alternative that is also budget friendly is Red Heart Unforgettable yarn if you are looking for colour changing yarn.
Approximately 1.5 skeins or 150 grams and 419 yards (or 384 m) used for Kiks + Jacks version with a finished width of 12 inches and a finished length of 42 inches.
6 mm crochet hook (US size 10). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. However our absolute favourite, slightly more pricey crochet hooks are clover crochet hooks. You can buy then in a set or individually.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.
CROCHET STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS
This pattern is written with US terms.
ch = chain (With one loop on your hook, yarn over and pull through the loop)
sc = single crochet (Insert hook into desired stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all two loops)
dc = double crochet (Yarn over and insert hook into desired stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. You now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all two loops)
tch = turning chain
st = stitch
sk = skip stitch
* = repeat the instructions following the * as directed
Note unless stated otherwise turning chains do not count as a stitch if there are 1 or 2 chains and the turning chain does count as a stitch if there are 3 or 4 chains.
SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION for the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf
The Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf is made by crocheting a foundation chain the size of your desired width. We will then move into the cluster stitch and repeat this pattern until we reach the desired length.
For this Kiks + Jack version we did not add tassles or edging to the scarf, however instructions are provided as to how to do this. Other customizations include increasing the width and sewing the ends together to make an infinity scarf.
This is a beginner friendly made to measure pattern that can accommodate different gauges.

Crochet Pattern Instructions for the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf
Chain a length equal to the desired width and count the number of stitches at the same time. Note depending on your gauge it will stretch out a little more after a few rows.
For Kiks + Jack Crochet’s version we chained a width of approximately 11 inches and it expanded by about another inch after a few rows. Our gift recipient likes slightly thinner scarves and likes to wrap it around her neck multiple times. For a thicker more chunkier version we would have increased the width to approximately 14-15 inches.
Kiks and Jack counted 40 chains to achieve an approximate width of 11 inches.
Increase the number of chains to ensure you have a multiple of 4. If you already have a multiple of 4 then keep it as is.
Kiks and Jack kept the chain as 40 chains, as 40 is a multiple of 4.
Chain an additional chain.
Row 1: ch4, 4dc in 5th ch from hook, sk next 3 ch, *4dc in next ch, sk next 3 ch, rep from * to the end, 2dc in the last ch. Turn
Row 2: ch 1 (counts as a sc), sk 1st dc, 1sc in each dc across the row, 1sc in top of tch. Turn
Row 3: ch3 (counts as a dc), 1 dc in 1st st, sk next 3 st, *4dc in next st, sk next 3 st, rep from * to end ending with 1 dc in tch. Turn.
Row 4: rep row 2
Row 5: ch3, sk first 2st, *4dc in next st, sk next 3st, rep from * towards end, 1dc in top of tch. Turn
This is a good time to check that you are happy with the width of your scarf. Sometimes the yarn stretches out more or less than you expect, and sometimes you change your mind regarding the width after a few rows (and the coloured patterns start to fall out). It’s important to check the width again before you go any further.
If your yarn is more stretchy than expected and/or you want to reduce the width, we suggest you frog (unravel) and start again reducing the number of chains you originally crocheted. Or if you decide you want to increase the width we suggest you frog and start again increasing the number of chains. It’s better to get this width right at the start. Make sure you follow all the instructions regarding multiples of 4.
Repeat rows 2-5 until you reach your desired length. End on a row 2.
Fasten off.
Kiks and Jack Crochet crocheted to a finished length of approximately 42 inches. We based it on a scarf that we knew our gift recipient wore all the time. There are a number of ways to wear a scarf and the length will be important if it is going to be worn a certain way. Infinity scarfs (joined at the ends) generally require less length compared to a scarf that is unjoined but wrapped around the neck many times. For our next version we plan to keep the scarf skinny and super long so that we can wrap it around almost 3 times.
Optional Instructions for the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf
So as mentioned above, we had a day to get this scarf completed fast, but here are some options that you may consider for your version:
Infinity Scarf Option: Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the two ends together. You could also crochet the two ends together using a slip stitch. Generally we like our infinity scarf to be wrapped twice and up close around our neck.
Crochet the edge of the Scarf: This is a great option especially if you crocheted your scarf in one solid colour and would like to add a contrasting edge, or you want to neaten up the edges. A contrasting edge can change the entire look of your scarf. Here are instructions for a simple edge:
Attach your desired yarn to the scarf but not at a corner of your scarf.
Row 1: ch1, sc around your entire scarf keeping the stitches even and not too close that it starts to bunch. At the corners you sc into the corner, ch2, sc into the same corner. Slip stitch to join.
Row 2: ch1, sc around again (OR if you want something thicker ch2, hdc around). At the corners you sc into the corner, ch2, sc into the same corner (OR if you are using hdc, then hdc into the corner, ch2, hdc into the same corner). Slip stitch to join.
Tassels Option: If you are planning to use your scarf with the ends hanging down, you may want to add tassels (we generally keep them off, when we keep the scarf wrapped tight around our neck). There are many ways to attach tassels to your scarf, however here is one easy method:
(i) Calculate how long you would like your tassels (eg. 4 inches). Double this number (ie. 8 inches)
(ii) Cut yarn that is equal to double your desired tassel length (ie. 8 inches). You can used a hard piece of card and wrap yarn around it multiple times to speed up this process.
(iii) Take a few strands (check the desired thickness of each tassel), fold them in half and twist the end to form a loop. Insert loop first through one of the holes/gaps at the end of your scarf and pull the ends through the loop and tighten.
(iv) Repeat step (iii) so that you have even tassels along the base of your scarf.
(v) Trim your tassels if required to ensure they are even.
Finish & Celebrate the Fast, Easy, Done in a Day Crochet Scarf
Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your scarf. Blocking your scarf will set the panel to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look.
We block our scarf by pinning it to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely bone dry.
Weave in all your ends.
