About Kiks + Jack Crochet

Hi! I’m Molly.

Welcome to the Kiks + Jack crochet blog where you will find modern, easy and free crochet patterns!  Crochet is so awesome because it is joyful, creative, part of the slow fashion movement, and something you can do with 5 minutes or 5 hours to spare.  A crocheted piece connects people, families, friends and strangers.

I’m a mum and just like all parents, super busy.  We are always told to make time for ourselves, but honestly it’s really hard to do.  Crochet is the one thing I can actually make time for – and there’s only one reason for that.  I can always crochet whenever I have a few minutes to spare.  I can crochet when I’m watching a movie with family and friends, or waiting for appointments. I can crochet those mindless stitches when I’m chatting to my parents over zoom or when a kid wants to sit with me and talk about their life… (they actually know I listen better and for longer when my hands are occupied).

As a result, I went from having “no time for a hobby”, to finding lots of little pieces of time in my day! And it was awesome to take all those little pieces of “found time” to work on this beautiful craft.  When I completed my first rainbow coloured sweater years ago for my daughter (years and years ago), I loved knowing that I had completed it using time I didn’t know I had!

I still find it incredibly fulfilling to know that I crochet without having to find large blocks of time that cut into my regular day. Finding time that I didn’t know I had and making something gorgeous with that time, is still one of my favourite things about crochet. I created this blog to share this love – and hopefully to inspire other busy people to find bits and pieces of time to produce something beautiful and creative!

My eldest daughter helps me with all the designs and yarn selection. She has always had a great eye for fashion and it’s great to have her fully integrated into the modern crochet design process. Designing modern crocheted clothing with her has been so much fun and I love working closely with her. I also love how this new generation are socially responsible and environmentally aware. They love the slow fashion movement, and love self made sustainable clothing.

I also love making crocheted garments for myself, my sisters and my mum – so I hope you find patterns on my blog that fit the entire generational spectrum!  That would be amazing.

And that brings me to my final point….I am constantly blown away at how this beautiful craft brings people together.  I didn’t realize this until I started.  Crochet has connected me closer to my kids as they help me design pieces, go yarn shopping with me and especially when they wear my clothes.  Crochet connects me with strangers who always stop to ask me about a crocheted sweater that I am wearing.  Bring out a crochet hook and your half finished garment, and you will always have someone stop and chat in delight – curious to see what you are making.  Crochet brings me closer to my parents and my sisters living on the other side of the world when I send them boxes of clothes that I made for them with love;  “Molly, it’s like you are giving me a warm hug, every time I wear it”! Crochet connects me with all my friends through our in person crochet clubs where we combine crochet and great food every month. And finally, crochet connects me with this AMAZING community of crochet designers and fibre artists on social media who I have huge amounts of respect for but never met in person.

In the way that words can lead to the creation of an incredible book, I hope you love the way a string of yarn can lead to the creation of an incredible crocheted piece.  I hope you love creating this journey ….  whoever you are creating it for!

PS. Thank you to all the talented crocheters, knitters, seamstresses and photographers in my family and in my life. Thank you for helping me test, create and inspire these patterns….and those that have passed this craft down to the next generation.
