This beautiful easy granny square crochet bag is practical, useful and a gorgeous DIY crochet project. Do you have a soft spot for granny squares? Not only do they represent the original crochet nostalgia but granny square projects always seem to finish so much faster than other crochet projects! It’s probably something to do with the fact that every time you complete a granny square, there is always a sense of achievement – as if, each granny square is a small mini project in itself.
It’s great to see how the bag starts to take shape, as you complete each crochet granny square… and as you piece the squares together – it’s a bit like a jigsaw puzzle! The squares are like building blocks, and combining them creates not only a visually appealing bag but a real sense of crochet satisfaction!
The granny squares also offer a practical advantage too. We used a glossy durable mercerized cotton. The combination of the granny square design, combined with the strong natural cotton fibres, created a sturdy bag, capable of holding all your necessary essentials.
We used a beautiful mercerized cotton by Lion brand yarns called 24/7 cotton. It’s a weight 4 and crocheting with this yarn feels so smooth and so good. The fact it is mercerized means the granny squares give off a beautiful sheen and the bag looks super polished! The sheen allows your hook to slip in and out of the stitches easily allowing that amazing crochet rhythm. We used the colour Jade, however since the creation of this bag, we have purchased about 4 other colours to make other garments and accessories – we love this cotton!

DESCRIPTION of The Sydney Easy Granny Square Crochet Bag
The Sydney Easy Granny Square Crochet Bag is made up of crochet squares. Approximately half are granny squares and the other half are made from simple plain squares. The change in pattern gives the bag a beautiful aesthetic look in addition to being sturdy and practical. Long crocheted handles are directly crocheted on to the main body of the bag. We suggest using cotton to ensure the bag is strong and durable. This is an easy and free crochet design pattern.
CROCHET MEASUREMENTS & SIZES
The bag is approximately 11 inches wide and 12 inches tall (excluding handles). If you use an alternative yarn with a different gauge, this may affect the sizing of the bag.
CROCHET GAUGE
Using a crochet hook size 4mm (US 6), the crochet gauge is approximately 16 stitches and 12 rows of stitch (half double crochet) in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).

Yarn brand: 24/7 Cotton by Lion Brand Yarn. Weight 4/Aran/Worsted. 100g per skein and 186 yards (or 170m). Approximately 1.5 skeins used.
Color used is Jade.
Substitute with any worsted weight yarn however check gauge. Suggestion is to use cotton for a stronger bag.
4 mm crochet hook (US size 6). We use many different crochet hooks and some of them can get quite pricey – but if you are a beginner and looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We love these and recommend them to all our beginner crochet friends.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
ch1-sp = chain 1 space
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch

Note unless stated otherwise turning chains do not count as a stitch if there are 1 or 2 chains and the turning chain does count as a stitch if there are 3 or 4 chains.

Crochet Instructions for Granny Square
Make 8 crochet granny squares as per the instructions below
ch6
Join with a sl st to form a ring
Round 1: ch3, work 2dc in to ring, (ch1, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch1, join with sl st to top of ch3
Round 2: sl in next 2dc, sl st in next ch1-sp, ch3, (2dc, ch1, 3dc) in same ch1-sp (corner), *ch1, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next ch1-sp, rep from * twice, ch1, join with a sl st to top of ch3
You should have 4 corners now made.
Round 3: sl in next 2dc, sl st in next ch1-sp corner, ch3, (2dc, ch1, 3dc) in same corner ch1-sp, *ch2, (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in next ch1-sp, ch2, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next ch1-sp, rep from * twice, ch2, (1dc, ch2, 1dc) in next ch1-sp, ch2, join with sl st to top of ch3
You should have crocheted 4 corners (3dc, ch1, 3dc) and what looks like a V stitch (1dc, ch2, 1dc) on each side (between each corner)

You should have crocheted 4 corners (3dc, ch1, 3dc) and what looks like a V stitch (1dc, ch2, 1dc) on each side (between each corner)
Fasten off.
Remember to make 8 of the above granny squares.
Note the granny squares based on guage and yarn is approximately 4 inches x 4 inches.
Crochet Instructions for Plain Squares
Make 5 plain squares as per the instructions below.
Note the plain squares should match the width and height of the granny squares you crocheted previously. Based on our guage, this equals 16 hdc stitches across and 12 rows.
ch 16 + 2 = 18. Turn
Row 1: hdc into the third stitch from the crochet hook, hdc across the row to the end. Turn
Row 2: ch2, hdc into the next st, hdc across the row to the end. Turn
At this point check the width of your plain square is equal to the width of one of your granny squares. Based on our guage, the plain square needs to be 16 hdc stitches across to match the width of our granny squares. You may need to start your plain square again to get the right number of hdc stitches to match the width of one of your granny squares.
Repeat row 2 until the height of your plain square matches the height of your granny square. In our design we crocheted 12 rows to create a plain square that matched the height of one our granny squares.
Fasten off
Make 5 of the above plain squares.
Note the plain squares (like the granny squares) based on guage and yarn is approximately 4 inches x 4 inches.
Assemble the squares to make the main part of the bag
Assemble the front of the bag as follows (note the granny squares and plain squares used in the diagram below are illustrative only and do not represent the actual design)
Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the squares together on the wrong side.
Fold plain square 1, square 2 and square 3 in half and then turn over so that the wrong side is facing up. Match the design on the back to the front and seam together (on the wrong side). See diagram below.
Crochet the handles directly on to the bag
You will now crochet handles from tip of the left side of the bag to the tip of the right side of the bag on the front. Do the same on the back. See diagram and instructions below.
Attach string to the starting point of the handle (suggest two stitches the left of the tip).
Row 1: ch1, sc across the next 4 st. Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc across the next 4 st (end of row). Turn
Continue row 2 until you meet your desired length of handle. For reference we crocheted approximately 18 inches.
Fasten off.
Join handle to the other side. You can do this by sc into the bag or if you prefer seaming it with a needle and yarn.
Repeat on the other side making sure your handles are exactly the same size.
Finish & Celebrate
Weave in all your ends.
