Oversized Cozy Crochet Shawl and Scarf

The Capilano Oversized Cozy Crochet Shawl and Scarf is a free pattern below.

This super soft crocheted shawl and scarf was designed because we were having a weather problem in June. We had a May of super warm sunny days – inspiring crop top patterns, cotton designs and mesh tops. Then….June comes along and days would start sunny and end in rain – definitely four seasons in one day! When the weather is unpredictable and changes without warning, the best thing to have is a crocheted shawl. You can place it over your shoulders, or wrap it around your neck and whip it off easily when the sun comes back out.

Oversized Cozy Crochet Shawl and Scarf

We designed this shawl using a beautiful neutral shade of tan. However after it was completed we decided to add a deep green trimming to the edge. It gave the shawl a beautiful woodsy feel and the colours seem to match with everything. We styled it with the Desaru Summer Cotton Crochet Top.

Crochet Scarf and Blanket

We used the sensationally soft Heartland yarn from Lionbrand. It’s premium acrylic and is one of our favourite yarns. It feels fluffy and squishy – always a great indication of how soft it is. It’s a weight 4, medium worsted and it comes in a variety of amazing colours. We used Grand Canyon for the main body and Rocky Mountains for the edge.

We only recommend products that we love and that we use.

Yarn brand: Heartland by Lion Brand Yarn. Weight 4/Medium/Worsted. 142g per skein and 251 yards (or 230 metres). Approximately 3 skeins of Colour 1 (Grand Canyon) for the main body and 1 skein of Colour 2 (Rocky Mountain) for the edge.

6 mm crochet hook (US size 10). We use many different crochet hooks and some of them can get quite pricey – but if you are a beginner and looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We love these and recommend them to all our beginner crochet friends.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for the Capilano Oversized Cozy Crochet Shawl and Scarf

Crochet the Main Body of the Scarf

Chain an odd number of chains approximately 40 inches wide. Turn

If you want the shawl to be larger and closer to a blanket you should crochet more than 40 inches. Note that if you make it too big, it may be difficult to wrap around your neck as a scarf.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across. Turn.

Row 2: ch1, sc in 1st st, (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st *(sc, dc) in next st, skip next st, rep from * across the row placing sc in last st. Turn

Repeat Row 2 until your shawl reaches the desired length. Kiks + Jack crocheted 20 inches long as it is the perfect length to be worn as a scarf, a shawl and to be used as a small handy blanket.

Fasten off.

Ruffle Edging

Using a contrasting yarn, tie the yarn in any stitch except a corner stitch.

Round 1: ch 2, hdc around the edge of the shawl. When you get to the corners (hdc, ch2, hdc) into the same corner stitch.

When you get to the end of the round, sl st to join. Turn

Round 2: ch4, sc into the next st, *ch 3, sc into the next st, rep from * all the way around, sl st to join

Fasten off.

Finishing

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your scarf. Blocking your scarf will set it to the shape and size you want and give it a professional look.

Weave in all your ends.
