The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top is a simple, beginner-friendly pattern that’s fully adjustable to your measurements and size inclusive. The complete step-by-step instructions are available below and free to access.
We love to crochet granny squares! They are pretty, fun and easy to carry around. The thing is, when we started this blog we promised we would ONLY post garments up that we love (and that we would wear on a regular basis). However to be honest….sometimes we don’t always love granny square outfits! While they can look super cool and retro, there are other times when granny square garments can appear too craftsy and not quite as modern as we personally like in our designs.
However we really love The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top. It’s pretty much made entirely from granny squares and although we kept ours pretty simple with the blue and white, you could add more color for a summery vibe. We also kept ours cropped at the waist but with this made to measure pattern you can make yours longer, wider and more oversized!

Please support us: We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a cup of coffee, you buy us a cup of motivation. Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.
We crocheted our version using a gorgeous vibrant yarn from Hobbii (who kindly sponsored the yarn for this project). We specifically chose this bamboo-blend yarn because of its incredible drape and lightweight feel, which makes the top breathable and flowy. Pretty much what you want for a summer crochet garment. The yarnโs soft sheen also adds a touch of polish. You can check out all the details below in “Crochet Materials”.
The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top is designed to be fully customizable. Since itโs a made to measure pattern, it works beautifully for all body types. Whether you prefer a relaxed fit or a more cropped and snug style, simply adjust the number of granny squares and the placement of the straps to suit your preferred fit. The adjustable crochet straps lets you tailor the fit even further for comfort.
Styling this crochet granny square top is easy. We have been wearing ours out with high-waisted jeans and maxi skirts. We also throw it over cute denim shorts. It’s one of those classic basic pieces that strangers ask us “where to purchase?” ๐

On a girls note, if you don’t like your bra strap showing consider crocheting this simple bra from Kiks + Jack in the exact same yarn as your top. Bras are REALLY fun to crochet and they are a lot cheaper than going out and purchasing a bra that will match your top exactly. Also on a side note we recently purchased these nipple covers for women on Amazon. They come in handy during our photography shoots!
As part of The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top pattern, weโll also show you how to crochet the cutest flower motif that sits at the center of each strap. They are really fun to make. We wanted to add them all over the top because we just loved crocheting them, but held back and just added two.

DESCRIPTION of The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top
The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top is a sleeveless top that is perfect for the warmer months. The top is made from crochet granny squares and the straps are adjustable and tied on top. A crochet flower is added to both straps.
The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top is a free and easy crochet pattern designed as made to measure, size inclusive and written specifically for beginners.
CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES
The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.
Kiks + Jack Crochet aims to design patterns that are made to measure. This approach celebrates the individuality of your body, something we believe in every DIY handmade piece. Unlike standard sizing, which confines you to a standard range from XS to 5XL, made-to-measure patterns let you define the fit using your actual measurements. Every body is unique, and we shouldnโt have to conform to a size chart. We appreciate its needed for mass production, but preferably not for handmade clothing (we do appreciate sometimes we are crocheting for someone else, and have included some standard measurements for your convenience).
To use the Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:
Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.
Finished length: Measure from top of your chest/bust towards your waistline and stop where you would like the top to end.
If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.
CROCHET GAUGE
Note: The Floral Granny Square Easy Crochet Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version, but you do not need to match it exactly or start swatching.
We used a weight 2 yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook.

Yarn Brand: Rainbow Bamboo by Hobbii. Weight 2/Fine/Sport. 100g per skein and 250 yards (or 273m) per skein.
Kiks + Jack’s version has a finished width of 15 inches and a finished length of 10 inches (without straps) and used approximately 1.4 skeins (or 350 yards/383 m) in total. We used Natural White and Soft Blue. Note that even though we used 1.4 skeins in total we required 2 skeins of white and 1 skein of blue.
Thank you to Hobbii for sponsoring us the yarn for this project (Note: Kiks + Jack Crochet selected the yarn we love and wanted to use)
4.5 mm and 4 mm crochet hook. We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We also love the slightly more pricey crochet hooks from clover crochet hooks. For this version we used the stunning Metal Furls Crochet Hooks. They have them in the most beautiful shades of pink blush, red, golden and silver in their streamline metal crochet hooks!
Yarn Winder!!! (Our new LOVE). We have held off on a yarn winder for a long time. We love the idea of crochet being simple with just a hook and some yarn. However we decided to get this yarn winder, because it was affordable and we weren’t sure about investing in a super fancy one yet. We love it because it breathes life back into scrappy yarn lying around that looks messy. It’s simple to use and is holding up really well for us.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

Fasten off. You have just completed one granny square.
Calculate how many granny squares you need:
Calculations & Instructions | Kiks + Jack’s Example |
1. Measure the size of your granny square | Based on our yarn used, our granny squares measured approximately 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches |
2. Measure your chest/bust size. | Our chest/bust size = 32 inches. |
3. Customize your desired fit. Subtract 1-2 inches if you would like a closer fit. Or leave as if for neutral ease. Tip: Consider your yarn. For example if it is very stretchy you may want a closer fit. If your yarn is not stretchy you may want to leave as is for neutral ease. | For Kiks + Jack we subtracted 2 inches as we wanted a closer fit. 32-2 = 30 inches |
4. Calculate approximately how many granny squares you will require for the width by dividing the chest/bust size by the width of your granny square | 30 inches/3.5 inches = 8.5 (approximately) |
5. Round down if you would like a closer fit and round up if you would like a looser fit (your top will be held secure by the straps). You can test it again later. | We wanted a tighter fit and so we round down to 8 granny squares. |
6. Calculate the number of rows of granny squares required by taking the desired length and dividing it by the length of your granny square. | Our desired length is 10 inches and our granny squares are 3.5 inches tall. 10/3.5 = 2.8 rows (round up to 3 rows) |
7. Calculate the total number of granny squares required | 8 granny squares (width) x 3 rows (length) = 24 granny squares in total required |
We will check this all again later and if you need to make adjustments you can always easily crochet another granny square.
Follow all the instructions above and crochet the required number of granny squares.
Assemble the Main Panel
Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking all your squares before assembly. There are specific tools to help block granny squares too! We block our squares by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely dry.
Using a yarn needle and colour 2 yarn, seam all your granny squares together in one large rectangle by following the instructions below:
Step 1: Seam the first row of squares together:
In our example, we would seam 8 granny squares together side by side making up row 1.
Step 2: Wrap this first row around your chest and see if you would like it larger (add another square) or tighter (remove a square). It’s a good time to adjust the width before you sew the other rows together.
Step 3: Seam the next rows of granny squares together side by side
We would then seam another row of 8 granny squares together side by side making row 2. Finally we would seam the last 8 granny squares together making row 3.
Step 4: Seam all the rows together
We would seam the three rows together making a large rectangle of 3 rows of 8 granny squares.
Step 5: Check the length of your top. Wrap it around the main part of your body and if you think you need a longer top you can crochet and seam another row of granny squares.
When you are happy with everything, turn the top wrong side out and seam the two ends together with a yarn needle and matching yarn. You should now have a bandeau.
Crochet the Straps
Use the smaller hook size.
Select the yarn color you would like for your straps.
ch 73
Row 1: sc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn
Row 2: ch5, sk 3, sc in next st, *ch4, sk 2, sc in next st, rep from * until end of row, ending with an sc in last st.
Leave a long tail of approximately 10 inches to sew to the top later and then fasten off.
You have completed one strap. Repeat the instructions to crochet 3 more straps.
Crochet the Flower
Use the smaller hook size. Select the color you would like to use for your flower.
ch4
Petal 1: tc into the 1st ch, ch2, tc into the same 1st ch, ch3, sc into the same 1st ch
Repeat Petal 1, 4 more times so you have 5 petals.
Leave a long tail for sewing and fasten off.
Crochet Assembly and Finishing
Try your top on. Using four stitch markers, mark out where you would like the straps. You may want to try the bandeau on.
Using a yarn needle and the long tails, sew the four straps to the inside of the top. They should tie at the top of your shoulders.
Sew your crochet flowers at the bottom of the front straps.
