The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, flexible on gauge and designed to be intuitive and beginner friendly.
We absolutely love long scarves. The type that you keep wrapping around you like a blanket. They make an outfit look instantly interesting and stylish allowing you to keep everything else simple. They are practical, pretty and fun to wear (especially when they are that long).

The problem is we sometimes get bored crocheting super long scarves. It’s different when you crochet a sweater. You get excited when you move from a ribbing to the main panel, from the back panel to the front panel and when you finally finish the sleeves.
So when we designed The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf we put everything we thought “interesting” into it:
Stitch changes – we incorporated all our favourite stitches. Sedge stitch. Bead stitch. Double crochets.
Colour changes – every stitch change is accompanied with a colour change to make it extra interesting
Double stranded the yarn – we were so lucky to be gifted this beautiful yarn from Hobbii. It’s one of our favourites and we have used it as is – a weight 2 yarn. However this time we doubled stranded it and often used two contrasting colours. It allowed us to create the most beautiful and unique shades of pink and magenta. It was fascinating to see how the colours fell out in this scarf and it make every colour change exciting (yarn nerds!). Double stranding also made the yarn that much thicker making it that much faster to complete.
Heart tassels – we LOVE crocheting these little hearts. It was so much fun adding these on the bottom and easy to sew on and take off at a later stage.

So lets discuss this gorgeous yarn from Hobbii. We have used it before in other patterns like The Lauren Light & Easy Long Sleeve Crochet Top. It’s one of our favourite basics and the Cotton Acrylic blend of Twister makes this top so so soft. We wear it on its own, as a light sweater and as a first layer under cardigans. So to receive this from Hobbii was awesome, as we had already designed with it before. Doubling the strands makes the scarf that much faster and so incredibly soft. It has the weight of a warm scarf and no scratchiness.

You can find all the details on the yarn we used in the section “Crochet Materials” below.

DESCRIPTION of The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf Free Pattern
The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf is a gorgeous scarf that uses multiple stitch patterns. Each large block switches the stitch pattern and the colour keeping it interesting and creating a beautiful texture. We add a simple edge to the scarf and cute mini crochet heart tassels at the end.
This scarf has beautiful drape and we have designed it long to allow you to wrap it a number of times around your neck. We designed ours to be wide and long however you can easily customize this scarf to your own dimensions.
For this pattern we used a double strand of weight 2 yarn that allows softness and thickness in addition to creating beautiful unique colours. This is made to measure pattern that is flexible on gauge.
CROCHET GAUGE
Using a hook size 5 (US size 8), approximately 15 double crochet across and 8 rows of double crochet in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).
Note the pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However if you are new to crochet, you may want to select a yarn with a similar gauge to this version. Note we used a weight 2 yarn however we doubled the strands to give an approximately weight 4 yarn. We moved back to a single strand for the edge and the heart tassels.

Yarn: Solid Twister by Hobbii for the solid colours, and don’t forget to check out Original Twister for the ombre range – Weight 2/Fine/Sport. We were gifted by Hobbii, 2 Original Twister Dahlia, 1 Solid Twister Cream, 1 Solid Twister Light Rose and 1 Solid Twister Peony. Note: we doubled the strands and picked at the colours we wanted to use and had yarn left over.
In total our scarf was made from approximately 420 g (in total) or 1835 yards (or 1680m) – double stranded. The finished scarf has a width of 11 inches and a finished length of approximately 78 inches.
Thank you to Hobbii for sponsoring the yarn for this project.
5 mm crochet hook (US size 8) and 4mm crochet hook (US size 6) We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We also love the slightly more pricey crochet hooks from Clover Crochet Hooks and the beautiful Furls Crochet Hooks (these are so stunning, we just love looking at them!)
Yarn Winder!!! (Our new LOVE). We have held off on a yarn winder for a long time. We love the idea of crochet being simple with just a hook and some yarn. However we decided to get this yarn winder, because it was affordable and we weren’t sure about investing in a super fancy one yet. We love it because it breathes life back into scrappy yarn lying around that looks messy. It’s simple to use and is holding up really well for us.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION for The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf
The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf is made by crocheting a foundation chain the size of your desired width. We will then move into a variety of stitch patterns and repeat this pattern until we reach the desired length.
For this Kiks + Jack version we double stranded light weight 2 yarn and sometimes used contrasting colours to create unique shades of pink. We added a very simple edge to the scarf using a single strand. At the end we show you how to crochet mini hearts to attach to the scarf as tassels.
The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf is a beginner friendly made to measure pattern that can accommodate different gauges. Thank you to Hobbii Yarns for sponsoring our yarn.

Crochet Pattern Instructions for The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf
Crochet the Main Panel of your Scarf
Use the larger hook size.
Note at the start of each block we are going to provide instructions on the two strands of colours we used and the length of each stitch block. However these are only suggestions so please feel free to modify the colours and the length of each block to suit your preference. A combination of contrasting strands and similar coloured strands gives the scarf different dimensions.
Block A: We used the outer strand of Twister Dahlia (reddish pink) with one strand of Solid Twister Peony (dark pink).
Chain a length equal to the desired width and count the number of stitches at the same time. Note depending on your gauge it will stretch out a little more after a few rows.
Increase the number of chains so that it is equal to a multiple of 3 and an odd number.
For Kiks + Jack Crochet’s version we chained a width of approximately 11 inches. This width is great if you are planning on creating a very long scarf that can be wrapped around your neck and shoulders multiple times for that chunky bulky effect. Kiks and Jack counted 44 chains to achieve an approximate width of 11 inches. However 44 chains is NOT a multiple of 3, so we increased it by one chain to 45 chains (odd number).
Add one more chain.
Kiks + Jack increased one more chain so the total number of chains for our version is 46.
Row 1: ch2, 2dc in 3rd st from hook, sk next 2st, *[1sc, 2dc] in next st, sk next 2st, rep from * towards the end of row with 1sc in last st. Turn

Kiks + Jack Crochet Tip: Think of each [1sc, 2dc] as a cluster, and you are crocheting clusters between the clusters from the previous row.
Repeat row 2 until (suggested) Block A is approximately 12 inches or approximately 15% of your total desired length.
Block B: We used the Solid Twister Cream (2 strands) and Solid Twister Light Rose (2 strands) ie. we kept these colours separate and did not mix them together
Start with Colour A (eg 2 strands of Cream)

Repeat Rows 3-6 until Block B is (suggested) equal to approximately 5.5 inches (or approximately 7% of your total desired length) ending on a row 6.

Row 1: ch2, hdc in 1st st, hdc in each st across the row, hdc in tch. Turn

Repeat Block A
Block E: We used Solid Twister Cream (2 strands) and Solid Twister Light Rose (2 strands) ie. we kept these colours separate and did not mix them together
Repeat Block B
Block F: We used the outer strand of Twister Dahlia (reddish pink) with the inner strand of Twister Dahlia (light pink)
Repeat Block C
Block G: We used the centre strands of Twister Dahlia (speckled pink) with Solid Twister Peony.

Block H: We used Solid Twister Light Rose (2 strands) and Solid Twister Peony (2 strands)
Repeat Block B

Repeat Block C
Block J: We used the outer strand of Twister Dahlia (reddish pink and second skein) with Solid Twister Peony
Repeat Block A.
Fasten off.
Crochet an Edge around the Scarf
Use a hook size 4. We did not double the yarn and used a single strand of yarn. However if you want a thicker edge you could double strand and use the larger hook size.
Choose a colour to edge the scarf (we chose the Solid Twister Light Rose).
Tip: You may want to do some weaving in and tidying up of any loose ends before you start to crochet the edge. This will allow you to use the edge as an additional way to secure and neaten up the sides of the scarf.
Attach yarn to edge of scarf (not at corner).
ch2, sc into next st, sc around the edge of the scarf. When you reach the last stitch near a corner, sc into the last st, ch2 and sc into the next st around the corner. Slip stitch to join when you reach the end.
Tip: Try to keep your stitches even.
We chose to crochet one round, however if you would like a thicker edge you can crochet another round.
Add Heart Tassels to The Spring Oversized Long Crochet Scarf
We attached heart tassels at the bottom of the scarf. These hearts are super fun and very easy to crochet.
Crochet a magic ring (there are many youtube videos showing you how to crochet a magic ring). Leave a tail of 3-4 inches
ch 2
3 tc into the magic ring
3 dc into the magic ring
ch 1
1 tc into the magic ring
ch 1
3 dc into the magic ring
3 tc into the magic ring
ch 2
Pull the magic ring a little tighter so that the heart comes together.
Insert hook into ring, draw a yarn through and slip stitch.
Pull the magic ring again as tight as possible.
Cut the working yarn and leave a tail of 3-4 inches.
Fasten off.
Make as many hearts as you need to (we crocheted 6 hearts) and use the 3-4 inch tails to tie on to scarf at the bottom.
