The End of Summer Crochet Sweater by designer Iwona Suchanek (@knotedthread) is a crochet pattern at its best. This crochet sweater is modern, casual and easy to throw over jeans and skirts. It’s one of those great patterns where if you master it (and it’s very beginner friendly) you can have five very different looking sweaters just by changing up the yarn.
The Kiks + Jack Crochet version used a super soft premium acrylic yarn. The weather was getting cooler and it was definitely feeling like the end of summer! By selecting premium acrylic, it added a level of warmth and coziness. Despite the mesh stitch, this sweater version gave enough warmth to wear on its own in the fall and isn’t too warm to wear with a crocheted cardigan in the winter.
If you are looking for something very light, try crocheting this sweater up in a mercerized cotton or cotton blend yarn and you would have a totally different look and feel for spring and summer!
Styling the End of Summer Crochet Sweater
The End of Summer Crochet Sweater looks amazing over jeans. Depending on your yarn choice, wear it on it’s own with a nude bra or if its getting chilly wear it as a second layer with a contrasting tank.
It would also look amazing to crochet this is in a solid darker colour and wear it with a matching maxi skirt for an evening out. I love black but I’m not a big fan of crocheting with black yarn. This would be a lot easier as you crochet into large spaces making it easier on your eyes!
Finally….summer. Styling this for summer is easy. Crochet it in cotton or bamboo using a lighter weight yarn. Consider crocheting it longer and wear it as a beach cover up or over a little pair of shorts!
The Crochet Yarn
We used a super soft, budget friendly yarn by Loops and Threads called Facets. It’s self striping so all that gorgeous colour effect is due to the yarn. We used it again for the Fall to Winter Crochet Sweater (Free Pattern) and we love the yellows and browns in that sweater. It reminds of us of falling leaves!
Iwona crocheted her original version in a lower weight cotton yarn and it looks fantastic. Take a look at her Instagram page (@knotedthread) to get a feel for what this would look like for a lighter top.
Pattern Tips & Customizations
The End of Summer Crochet Sweater Pattern is written as a made to measure size inclusive pattern. We lengthened the pattern on the sleeves and lengthened it on the main body panel. You could lengthen it even more and wear it as a cute dress.
Just a tip … if you are going to crochet this pattern using a more stretchy yarn like we did eg. acrylic make sure you block your pieces before assembly. It’s a great habit to block your work anyway, but it’s particularly helpful for this pattern – as the large mesh stitch combined with a stretchy yarn can create a pretty stretchy sweater. Blocking helps you get it to the size and shape that you need.
