Drape Summer Crochet Tank Free Pattern

The Panamer Drape Summer Crochet Tank is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and beginner friendly.

Have you ever wanted to crochet one of those summer tanks that sit slightly oversized on your body? Not the fitted, tight cropped kind (that look amazing too) but the tank that you can thrown on and it drapes and falls in all the right places?

Drape Summer Crochet Tank

We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a cup of coffee, you buy us a cup of motivation.  Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.

The Panamer Drape Summer Crochet Tank is designed for a relaxed drape. We used one of our favourite summer yarns. It is 51% cotton and 49% rayon from bamboo – creating an all natural, beautiful breathable crocheted fabric. We used a beautiful Pale Pink colour and you can find all the details below in the Crochet Materials sections. Check out our other designs using this yarn, such as the Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Top.

The other exciting thing about this top is this amazing stitch – it may be our new favourite stitch! It’s a mesh stitch and uses blocks of double crochets to create a beautiful design with even more drape. The overall effect looks so much more complex than it really is. You are basically creating spaces using simple chains and then crocheting into these spaces to create the block stitch! Crocheting into large spaces is awesome and you can basically crochet this with half your attention somewhere else (eg. Netflix!)

Did you see the sides?

Drape Summer Crochet Tank

We designed a super easy contrasting stitch panel on the side using single crochets. It keeps the drape in check and gives a little more structure to the top. It also adds an interesting contrast to the block stitch.

DESCRIPTION of the Drape Summer Crochet Tank

The Panamer Drape Summer Crochet Tank is a sleeveless tank top with beautiful drape created by an easy mesh stitch. It is designed to be loose and oversized however you can customize it with this made to measure pattern. It features simple shoulder straps and a contrasting side panel.

This is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and beginner friendly.

CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES

The pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurements for those who wish to use it.

To use this pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.

Finished length: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder. We wanted an oversized look and our top to hit just above the hips so we could tuck it in.

Length to armpit: Measure from where you would like the top to end up to bottom of your armpit

If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

Note: Designed as a classic fit with significant positive ease.

CROCHET GAUGE for the Drape Summer Crochet Tank

Using a crochet hook size 4mm (US size 6) approximately 14 stitches and 8 rows of double crochets in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).

Note this pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version.

Yarn brand: Coboo by Lion Brand Yarns. Weight 3/Light/Light Worsted. 100g per skein and 232 yards (or 212 metres).

Kiks + Jack crocheted a size S/M with a finished width of 17 inches and a finished length of 13 inches (without straps) and used approximately 1.65 skeins or 383 yards (or 350m).

Color used is Pink.

4 mm crochet hook (US size 6). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. However our absolute favourite, slightly more pricey crochet hooks are clover crochet hooks. You can buy then in a set or individually.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY OF CROCHET CONSTRUCTION

The Panamer Drape Summer Crochet Tank is made by first crocheting a front panel and an identical back panel. We will start by crocheting the two panels bottom up. When we have reached the desired length, we will crochet side panels directly on to the front and back panel and seam together to create a bandeau. We will then crochet straps directly on to the top.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for the Drape Summer Crochet Tank

Crochet the Front Panel

Calculate the length of your foundation chain as follows:

Halve your “Chest/Bust MeasurementOur chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around
Half our chest/bust measurement = 32/2 = 16 inches
If you would like your top to be oversized you can add 1- 2 inches. We chose to not add additional inches to our top as our yarn has a lot of stretch.
Calculate 75% of this measurement (we want smaller front and back panels to accommodate for the side panels)75% x 16 inches = 12 inches
(0.75 x 16 = 12)

Chain a length as calculated above and count the number of stitches. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it.

We want your total chain to be a multiple of 5 stitches. If it is not, add more chains to ensure your total chain ends on a multiple of 5 stitches.

Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around and we have to chain 12 inches as per our calculation above. We reached 12 inches after chaining 59 chains. We add one more chain to give a total of 60 chains to achieve a multiple of 5 stitches.

Add 3 more chains.

Example: After we chained 60 chains, we added 3 more chains, so the total number of chains in our foundation = 63 chains.

Row 1: 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 3 ch, *ch1, sk 1, 1 dc in each of the next 4 ch, rep from * across to last ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn

Row 2: ch 1, 1sc in first st, *ch4, skip 4dc, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * across, ending with last sc in top of tch. Turn.

Row 3: ch3 (counts as a dc), 4dc in next ch-4 sp, *ch 1, 4dc in next ch-4 sp, rep from * across to last ch-4 sp, 1 dc in last sc. Turn

Repeat rows 2 and row 3 in that order until your top reaches a length equal to your “Length to armpit measurement”

Example: Our “length to armpit measurement” = 13 inches so we repeat rows 2 and 3 until the length of the top reaches 13 inches.

Fasten off.

Crochet the Back Panel

Repeat all the instructions under Front Panel to create an identical Back Panel.

Crochet the Side Panels

We will now crochet the two side panels directly on to the front panel using single crochets. Here is a photo again for guidance.

Drape Summer Crochet Tank

Lay the front panel right side up in front of you.

Attach a matching yarn on the top, left side of your front panel.

Row 1: ch1, sc across the left side of your front panel to the end. Turn

Tip: Crochet sc evenly into the block stitches, placing 2sc in the larger gaps/spaces and 1sc in the smaller spaces between the blocks. The key is to have even stitches.

Row 2: ch1, sc across to the end. Turn

Repeat row 2 until the length of this single crochet side panel reaches 25% of your [“half chest bust measurement” + any additional inches if you added it].

Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around. Half of this measurement = 16 inches. 25% of this half = 16 x 25% = 4 inches. We repeat row 2 until the total side panel = 4 inches

You will now repeat on the other side (the right side) of your front panel.

Attach a matching yarn on the top right side of your front panel.

Row 1: ch1, sc across the right side of your front panel towards the bottom end. Turn

Row 2: ch1, sc across to the end. Turn

Repeat row 2 until the length of this single crochet side panel reaches 25% of your [“half chest bust measurement” + any additional inches if you added it].

You should now have a front panel with two side panels of single crochet. One on the left side and one on the right side.

In our example, the left side panel is equal to 4 inches, the right side panel is equal to 4 inches and the front panel is equal to approximately 12 inches.

Assembly of the Drape Summer Crochet Tank

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking all your panels before assembly. Blocking your panels will set your panels to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look.

We block our panels by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges so the front and back panel are similar. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely bone dry.

Turn the front panel with the two side panels wrong side facing up.

Using matching yarn and a yarn needle, seam the back panel to the side panels. You should now have a tube/bandeau made up of a front panel, two side panels and a back panel.

If you prefer you can also crochet the back panel to the side panels using single crochet.

Crochet the Straps

Turn the bandeau right side up and so that front panel is facing you and the back panel is lying directly behind the front panel.

Place two stitch markers at the front of the top where you would like the straps. You can put the bandeau on to see where it would be most comfortable.

Attach a yarn to 2 stitches before the first stitch marker.

Row 1: ch1, sc across the next 5 st. Turn

Row 2: ch1, sc across until the end of the row. Turn

Repeat row 2 until the strap is long enough to reach over your shoulder and be seamed to the back right side of your top.

Fasten off.

Do the same for the second strap on the other side.

Try your top on. Using locking stitch markers (and you may need help for this), attach the two straps to the back side of your top so that the top and straps feel secure. Using a yarn needle and identical yarn, sew the two straps to the inside back of the top.
