Crochet V Neck Tank Top Free Pattern

The Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and designed to be intuitive and beginner friendly.

When we first wrote The Cottesloe Beach Crochet Crop Top we wrote it from XS to 5XL and we were proud to be size inclusive. However we now realize that these are still commercially graded sizes … and although we appreciate the need for them in big box clothing stores, it’s better to crochet something to fit you exactly. As a result we have been slowly converting our older commercially sized patterns into made to measure patterns which in many cases requires a re-write all together.

But it’s worth it! Because you get a garment that fits your dimensions … perfectly!

We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a cup of coffee, you buy us a cup of motivation.  Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.

So for the Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top pattern we have kept the original pattern, changed the construction to make it slightly easier for beginners and converted it into a made to measure pattern. We also changed up the yarn (we so love this yarn and are excited to share the details with you below) and changed up the length.

We left the edges raw because we love that deconstructed, worn in and slightly oversized tank look.

This yarn is from Hobbii and it’s 60% Bamboo Viscose and 40% Cotton. It has incredible drape and doesn’t split! You can find all the details in the “Crochet Materials” section below along with some great substitutions in case this yarn isn’t easily accessible for you.

If you are familiar with our blog, you probably know that we design and crochet for beginners. Changing up the stitches isn’t always perceived as “beginner friendly”, but crocheting pieces that keep you engaged, interested and are fast to finish is also important for beginners! For the Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top, we use four different stitch patterns, however they are all very simple.

CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES

The Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus commercially graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurements for those who wish to use it.

To use this pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.

Finished length: Measure from the top of your hips (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder.

Length to armpit: Measure from where you would like the top to end up to bottom of your armpit

If you would like to use a standard measurement for the chest/bust – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

Note: Designed as a classic fit with some positive ease although this can be adjusted.

CROCHET GAUGE for The Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top

Using a crochet hook size 3.5mm approximately 20 stitches and 16 rows of single crochets in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).

Note the Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version.

Yarn Brand: Rainbow Bamboo by Hobbii. Weight 2/Fine/Sport. 100g per skein and 250 yards (or 273m) per skein.

Kiks + Jack crocheted a size XS with a finished width of 16 inches and a finished length of 18 inches (without straps) and used approximately 425 yards (or 465 m) in total. We used the colour Green Tea.

Substitutions: We would love to make this top again with

Yarn brand: Coboo by Lion Brand Yarn. Weight 3/DK/ Light Worsted. 100g skein and 232 yards (or 212m).

This weight 3/light worsted/DK by Bernat yarn.

4.5 mm crochet hook (US size 7). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. However our absolute favourite, slightly more pricey crochet hooks are clover crochet hooks. You can buy then in a set or individually.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY OF CROCHET CONSTRUCTION

The Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top is made by first crocheting a large panel to fit the entire body width. We will crochet this bottom up until we have reached the desired armpit to length measurement. Next we will seam the panel together to form a tube/bandeau.

From here, we will crochet the V neck on to the front. We will crochet the straps directly from the V neck that will be then seamed to the back. Finally as an optional trim, we will add a lace edge to the bottom.

This top is constructed primarily using a number of easy, beginner friendly stitches.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Cottesloe v2.0 Crochet V Neck Tank Top

Crochet the Main Panel

Calculate the length of your foundation chain as follows:

Take your “Chest/Bust MeasurementOur chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around
If you would like your top to be fitted and/or your yarn is stretchy, you can keep the measurement as is. If you would like a more loose top, then you can add 1-2 inches depending on how much positive ease you would like. We will check this again after a few rows.We wanted a tighter fit and our yarn was quite stretchy so we left as is at 32 inches.

Chain a length as calculated above and count the number of stitches at the same time. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it. We want your total chain to be a multiple of 4 stitches. If your chain is not a multiple of 4 stitches then increase the number of chains until the total is a multiple of 4.

For example Kiks + Jack chains 127 chains to achieve a total length of 32 inches. 127 is not a multiple of 4 so we crochet one more stitch to bring it to a total of 128 chains which is a multiple of 4.

Row 1: ch2, hdc into 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in each and every st until the end. Turn

Row 2: ch4, sk st, *1dc in 2nd st, ch1, sk next st, rep from * until you reach the last st. Turn.

Row 3: ch2, *hdc into next ch-sp, hdc in next dc, rep from * to end with hdc into the last st. Turn

Row 4: ch4, *1dc directly above the dc from 2 rows below, ch1, sk next st, rep from * until you reach the last st. Turn.

It’s a great time to check if you are completely happy with the width of the top before you crochet any further. You may want to wrap the panel around you after 4 rows of crochet to see if you are happy with the width of the sweater. If it’s perfect keep going. If you would like to make changes to the width, it is best to start again increasing or decreasing the number of chains that you originally used.

Row 5: repeat row 3

Row 6: repeat row 4

Row 7: repeat row 3

Row 8: ch4, tc in 2nd st, tc across until the last st. Turn

Row 9: ch1, sc in 1st st, sc across until the last st. Turn.

Row 10: repeat row 9 (sc row)

Row 11: repeat row 8 (tc row)

Row 12: repeat row 9 (sc row)

Row 13: repeat row 9 (sc row)

Row 14: repeat 8 (tc row)

Row 15: repeat row 9 (sc row)

Continue repeating row 2 to row 15 in that order until you reach the desired “Length to Armpit Measurement“. Note you may be adding an optional lace hem at the bottom which will then add a little to the length.

Make sure you end on a hdc row or a sc row.

Fasten off.

Seam the Main Panel to Make a Tube

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your panel. We block our panels by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the edges. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panel is completely dry.

Fold the main panel in half width wise. Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the sides of the panel together on the wrong side.

Note: We appreciate you could have crocheted this “in the round”, however due to the multiple stitches and our goal to write patterns for beginners, we thought it would be easier to crochet this as a flat panel and seam it down the sides.

Fasten off.

Measure Out the V Neck

We will now crochet the front part of the top that includes the V neck design and straps.

Turn the tube right side out.

Fold the tube so that the seamed edge is facing you on the right. You will now place three stitch markers on the top as follows:

Place the first stitch marker on the very right edge of your top (on the top of the seamed edge).

Place the second stitch marker, in the centre of your top (use a measuring tape to determine the centre of your top).

Place the third stitch marker on the very left edge of your top.

You will be crocheting two “triangles”. The first triangle (right triangle) will be crocheted between the first and second stitch marker and the second triangle (left triangle) will be crocheted between the second and third stitch marker. Let’s start with the first triangle on the right.

Crochet the Right Side V Neck and Right Strap

Attach a yarn to the stitch with the first stitch marker (the right side of your top).

Row 1: ch1, sc into each st until you reach the second stitch marker (the centre of your top). Turn.

Row 2: ch 1, sc2tog the first 2 stitches, sc into each st until you reach the second last st in the row, sc2tog the last 2 stitches. Turn.

(For Row 2, you are working back towards the edge and reducing the number of stitches in the row by 2 due to the sc2tog stitch)

Row 3: ch1, sc into 1st st, sc into each st until the end of the row (centre of top)

Continue to repeat row 2-3 until you have 4 stitches left in the row.

Do not fasten off. You will now crochet the right strap.

Row 1: ch 1, sc into each st until the end. Turn

Repeat row 1 until the strap is long enough to reach over your shoulder and be seamed to the back right side of your top.

Fasten off.

Crochet the Left Side V Neck and Left Strap

Repeat all the instructions in the above section to crochet the V Neck and strap on the left side of your top.

Crochet the Fan Pattern at the Base of Top

Attach a yarn at the bottom of your bandeau on the side.

Row 1: ch1 (add a stitch marker to this ch), sc into 1st st, sc in all stitches around the base evenly, sl st to join the tch (to where the stitch marker is).

Row 2: ch1, sc into first st, *ch5, sk3, sc into next st, rep * until end making sure the last ch5 ends with a sl st into the bottom of the tch.

Row 3: ch2, 3sc into first ch-5 sp, *7dc into next ch-5 sp, 3sc into next ch-5 sp, rep* until the end. sl st to join.

Fasten off.

CROCHET ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING

Try your top on. Using stitch markers, attach the two straps to the back side of your top. Using a yarn needle and identical yarn, sew the two straps to the inside back of the top.

You may need to block the entire top again, especially at the V neck.

Weave in all your ends.
