Team the Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top with a neutral skin coloured bra to highlight the top and the beautiful shades of colour. Alternatively wear it with a delicate bra like the Magnolia Lacy Crochet Bra Top and use a contrasting colour. Contrasting or subtle, you will look amazing wearing crochet on crochet!

Initially we were going to design The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top with little cap sleeves, but we love the simplicity of a really good tank. If you have a great fitting tank, its the go to every day top in summer. The stitch is basically double crochets into the space to give it the mesh – creates a “never need to iron ever” top. Mesh gives the top a lovely drapey and airy feel – and who doesn’t LOVE stitching into spaces. Its brainless and you move through the rows so quickly!!

The top is not designed to be too cropped, however the length is easy to customize if you would like it shorter or longer.

Now to the yarn…amazing! Its by Lionbrand and its 51% cotton and 49% rayon made from bamboo. We purchased Silver for this top although it looks like more like a light Lavender but we are also looking at Beige, Taupe and Denim! You can catch all the details in the section “Crochet Materials” below.

It goes without saying that not only does this yarn give drape, its soooooo soft! It feels amazing on your body and the cotton keeps you cool.

DESCRIPTION OF The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top

The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top is a sleeveless top with a simple stitch and simple edging. It features a V neck design with comfortable shoulder straps. This is a free and easy crochet pattern that can be modified for a variety of sizes.

CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES

The pattern instructions for The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurement for those who wish to use it.

To use this pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.

Finished length: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder. We wanted our top to hit a little lower than the waistline.

Length to armpit: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to bottom of your armpit

Cross Back: Measure from shoulder to shoulder (we will use this for armhole shaping)

If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

Note: The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top is designed as a classic fit with some positive ease.

CROCHET GAUGE for The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top

We only recommend products that we love and that we use.

Yarn brand: Coboo by Lion Brand Yarn. Weight 3/Light/Light Worsted. 100g per skein and 232 yards (or 212 metres). Approximately 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) skeins.

Color used for The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top is Silver.

You can also purchase Coboo by Lion Brand Yarn here on Amazon and we always check this for great deals. If you are lucky your colour may be available and delivery may be faster.

4 mm crochet hook (US size 6). We use many different crochet hooks and some of them can get quite pricey – but if you are a beginner and looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We love these and recommend them to all our beginner crochet friends.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

CROCHET STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS

The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top uses US terminology.

ch = chain (With one loop on your hook, yarn over and pull through the loop)

hdc = half double crochet (Yarn over and insert hook into desired stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops)

dc = double crochet (Yarn over and insert hook into desired stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. You now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all two loops)

sp = space (eg. crochet into the space and not the stitch)

sl st = slip stitch

tch = turning chain

st = stitch

sk = skip stitch

* = repeat the instructions following the * as directed

Note unless stated otherwise turning chains do not count as a stitch if there are 1 or 2 chains and the turning chain does count as a stitch if there are 3 or 4 chains.

SUMMARY OF CROCHET CONSTRUCTION

The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top is made by first crocheting a front panel and an identical back panel. We will start by crocheting the panel bottom up. We will shape for the arm openings and at the same time for the V neck. We will seam the two panels together to complete the tank top.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top

Crochet the Front Panel

Chain a length that is equal to half your “Chest/Bust measurement“ and is an ODD number of chains. Count the number of chains as you crochet. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it and after you crochet a few rows, the total length of the top will be slightly larger than your chest/bust measurement providing some positive ease.

Kiks + Jack Crochet Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around so we chained 67 chains or a total relaxed length of 16 inches (32 inches/2). We made sure it was an odd number.

Row 1: ch2, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in each ch across to the end. Turn.

Row 2: ch4, dc in 3rd st, *ch1, sk 1st, dc into the next st, rep * across to the last st. Turn

Row 3: ch4, dc in first sp, *ch1, dc in next sp, rep * across to the end, skip the last sp and instead dc in tch. Turn

This is a good time to check that you are happy with the width of your sweater. Sometimes the yarn stretches out more or less than you expect. It’s important to check the width again before you go any further. Place it up against you after 3 rows of crochet and see if the width is correct for you (or measure it if you are making it for someone else).

If your yarn is more stretchy than expected and/or you want to reduce the width, we suggest you frog (unravel) and start again reducing the number of chains you originally crocheted. Or if you decide you want it more oversized and you want to increase the width we suggest you frog and start again increasing the number of chains. It’s better to get this width right at the start.

Repeat row 3 and stop when the total length reaches your “Length to Armpit measurement”.

Don’t fasten off.

Crochet the Front Panel – Shaping for the V Neck

We will now shape for the V neck and the arm opening.

Using a measuring tape, find the halfway centre point of your top width wise and place a stitch marker at this point.  The stitch marker will represent the tip of the V neck.

We will also shape for the armholes by slip stitching in from the edge. We need to calculate the number of stitches we will drop to shape the armholes as follows:

“Chest Bust Measurement”/2 – “Cross Back measurement” = total stitches dropped for armhole shaping

Kiks + Jack Crochet Example: 32 inches/2 – 14 inches = 2 inches. We need to drop 1 inch from the left side and 1 inch from the right side. Based on our guage, 1 inch = approximately 4 stitches, so we need to drop 4 stitches on each side.

Starting with the left side, place a stitch marker on the number of stitches you need to drop (or you can measure the number of inches in from the left).

In Kiks + Jack Crochet example we would place a stitch marker on the fourth stitch in from the left side (or we could measure 1 inch in from the left and place a stitch marker there).

Row 1: sl st across to the first stitch marker (slip stitch in the space where a space is available), ch4, dc in next sp, *ch1, dc in next sp, rep * across until the second last sp from the centre stitch marker, dc2tog the next 2 spaces (note: not 2 stitches, 2 spaces). Turn

To dc2tog in 2 spaces: yarn over, insert your crochet hook into the desired first space, yarn over and draw the yarn through the space. You should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. You should have 2 loops on your hook. Yarn over and insert your hook into the second space, yarn over and draw the yarn through the space. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops. You should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all loops. There are other ways, however this is one of the easiest for beginners.

Row 2: 2 sl st into next 2sp, ch4, dc in the same 2nd sp, *ch1, dc in next sp, rep * across until you reach last sp, sk sp and instead dc in top of tch. Turn.

Row 3: ch4, dc in 1st sp from hook, *ch1, dc in next sp, rep * across until the second last sp from the centre, 2dctog the next 2sp. Turn

Row 4: repeat row 2

Row 5: repeat row 3

Repeat rows 2 and row 3 in that order until you reach 5 spaces in a row (or 5 mesh stitches).

Your total length of your top should be equal to your “Finished Length measurement”. If your top needs more length then crochet the following until you have reached your desired length:

ch4, dc in first sp, *ch1, dc in next sp, rep * across to the end, skip the last sp and instead dc in tch. Turn

Fasten off.

Front Panel – Shaping on the other side

Attach a matching yarn on the right side of the front panel at the edge.

Repeat all the instructions above under Front Panel – shaping for the V neck on the right side.

Your front panel is now completed with a main body and a V neck.

Crochet the Back Panel

Repeat all the instructions under Front Panel to create an identical Back Panel.

Assembly and Finishing The Lavender Bamboo Crochet Summer Tank Top

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your panels before assembly. Blocking your panels will set your panels to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look.

Kiks + Jack Crochet block our panels by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges so the front and back panel are similar. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely bone dry.

Place the two panels together with the right side facing together and the wrong side facing outwards.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the two shoulder straps together.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam together the left side and the right side from the bottom edge up to the bottom of the armholes.

We will now crochet around the neckline.

Attach yarn at the top of the V neck on the left side.

Row 1: ch1, sc around the V neckline. Crochet the sc stitches evenly. sl st to join

Row 2: ch2, hdc around, sl st to join.
