We have been wanting to design a full matching crochet outfit for a while now. The type of outfit that shouts “CROCHET” when you walk down the street. We love having conversations about crochet with friendly strangers! Inspiring non crocheters or new beginners to go home and start crocheting is awesome – and potentially introducing someone to a craft that makes them happy, supports slow fashion and gives them a new hobby … makes us happy.
We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.
Of course the great thing about this outfit is that you can style it or select yarn that doesn’t shout “crochet”. We initially styled the Manley Striped Crochet Skirt on its own and teamed it with a long sleeve white sweater. This matching crop top has also been worn out over jeans, shorts and a polished black maxi skirt! The great thing about crocheting a two piece outfit is that you can mix it up and get maximum use out of your crochet outfits!
Do you love this bright yellow? If you are looking for a totally different look, try crocheting this outfit in a solid darker colour or consider a more neutral navy blue and white stripe.
Selecting the right yarn is really important for this pattern. Look for a cotton yarn however try to avoid the stiff cotton yarns used to make pot warmers and dish cloths. We used a yarn from Loops & Threads and you can find all the details below in “Crochet Materials”. Its perfect for any crochet garment that works well with a stretchy yarn. It is 57% cotton, 28% nylon and 15% polyester and this blend is what gives it the needed spring.
This yarn has also been used in crop tops where you want a more fitted top. Check out the Cottesloe Beach Waves Crochet Crop Top that uses the same yarn.

Yarn brand: Capri Cotton by Loops & Threads. Weight 4/Worsted/Medium. 100g per skein and 174 yards (or 160 metres). Approximately 1 (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3) skeins of Colour 1 (Yellow) and 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2) of Colour 2 (White). This is based on the pattern design outlined below however changing the stripe, length of top, and colour of straps may affect the number of skeins required.
Substitute with any 4/Worsted/Medium yarn however check gauge. If you are not using a yarn with a stretch you may want to crochet up 1-2 sizes for a looser tank style.
4.5 mm crochet hook (US size 7). We use many different crochet hooks and some of them can get quite pricey – but if you are a beginner and looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We love these and recommend them to all our beginner crochet friends.
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Manley Striped Crochet Fitted Crop Top
We have updated this pattern as a made to measure pattern, meaning you can crochet it directly to your desired measurements. You can find this updated pattern here.
Crochet the Main Bandeau
Using Colour 1 yarn (eg. yellow).
ch 95 (109, 123, 137, 151, 165, 200, 214, 228), sl st to join the end of the chain to the start of the chain.
Tip: Make sure your chain is not twisted when you join the chain.
Round 1: ch2, hdc around, sl st to join at the top of the tch.
Tip: If you are new to crocheting in the round, it may be helpful to count the number of stitches for the first few rounds and every now and then to ensure your stitch number stays consistent. For this main bandeau panel, there will not be any shaping so you should always be crocheting 95 (109, 123, 137, 151, 165, 200, 214, 228) stitches within every round
Switch to Colour 2 yarn (eg. white)
Round 2: ch 3, turn, dc into next stitch, dc across, sl st to join at the top of tch.
Switch to Colour 1 yarn (eg. yellow)
Round 3: repeat row 2
Switch to Colour 2 yarn (eg. white)
Round 4: repeat row 2
Here is a tip about changing colour. Do not fasten off each time you change the colour. Just leave it hanging and start the next colour. When it’s time to change back to the first colour (after 1 row) just bring the yarn up to the new row and start crocheting.
Continue to repeat round 2, switching the yarn until you reach the desired length of your bandeau panel. Based on our (very) cropped design, the length is approximately 10 – 12 inches – however you should crochet rows until you reach your own preferred length. You can also pull the bandeau up under your armpits to check the length.
Fasten off.
Crochet the Straps
Fold the bandeau so that the start of the round (the rows with all the turning chains) is on the right edge of your top.
Place two stitch markers at the front of the top where you would like the straps. You can put the bandeau on to see where it would be most comfortable. For the XS, the two straps were placed approximately 3 inches from the left and right side.
Attach a yarn to the first stitch marker. We used Colour 1 yarn (yellow).
Row 1: ch1, sc across the next 4st. Turn
Row 2: ch1, sc across until the end of the row. Turn
Repeat row 2 until the strap is long enough to reach over your shoulder and be seamed to the back right side of your top.
Fasten off.
Do the same for the second strap crocheting into the second stitch marker.
Assemble and Finish The Manley Striped Crochet Fitted Crop Top
Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking before assembly. Blocking your panels will set your panels to the shape and size you want and give it a professional look. We block our panels by pinning our crochet to an old yoga mat. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely bone dry.
Try your top on. Using stitch markers, attach the two straps to the back side of your top so that the top and straps feel secure. You may need someone to help you with this. Using a yarn needle and identical yarn, sew the two straps to the inside back of the top.
Weave in all your ends.
