Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top Free Pattern

Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top Free Pattern

The Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and designed to be intuitive and beginner friendly.

This breezy short sleeve top is easy to wear, easy to crochet and super comfortable! It was initially designed as a long sleeve mesh top, similar to the Nusa Mesh Net Crochet Sweater…however when the body was completed, we decided to experiment with little cap sleeves and it looked great! Perfect for summer!

We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a cup of coffee, you buy us a cup of motivation.  Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.

Do you love the small mesh stitch? Its simple and pretty. The mesh holes aren’t too large so you can wear it on your own and the best thing about a mesh is that its fun to crochet and works up fast. Its also so much fun and so easy crocheting mesh!

The Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top is a great alternative to a plain cotton T-shirt. Style it the same way but with a cotton crochet mesh top you will never have to worry about wrinkles or ironing. Throw this over shorts, jeans and wear it under slouchy cardigans as the weather gets cooler. Team it with a long maxi skirt to dress it up. This is a great piece to invest your precious time into – you will definitely get a lot of wear out of it.

We used a gorgeous lightweight cotton yarn. It’s 52% cotton and 48% acrylic and is the perfect blend of strength and structure from the cotton and softness from the acrylic. The colour used is called “Succulent” blue, however they have a great range of colours and we have our eye on Iris and Silver. My daughter is designing a crochet dress and with the colour Blush.

You can find all the details of this yarn in the Crochet Materials section below. If you are unable to find this yarn, any cotton blend would work for this easy crochet pattern. Try to avoid a scratchy cotton yarn that is suited better for dish cloths and bags.

DESCRIPTION for the Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top

The Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top is a light and airy piece that can be worn from spring to summer. It features short capped sleeves and a square neckline. The stitches used are the small mesh stitch and simple half double crochets.

This is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure and written for beginners.

CROCHET MEASUREMENTS & SIZES

The pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurements for those who wish to use it.

To use this pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Finished length: Measure from top of your shoulder towards your waistline and stop where you would like this crochet top to end. We designed ours to hit slightly above the hips.

Armhole Depth: Measure from the top outside edge of the shoulder down to the armpit

If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

If you would like to use standard sizing for armhole depth – then use approximately 6-6.5 (6.5-7, 7-7.5, 7.5-8, 8-8.5, 8.5-9, 9-9.5, 9.5-10, 10-10.5) inches or 15.5-16.5, 16.5-17.5, 17.5-19, 19-20.5, 20.5-21.5, 21.5-23, 23-24, 24-25.5, 25.5-26.5) centimetres

Note: The Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top is designed as a classic fit with some positive ease.

CROCHET GAUGE

Using a 4mm hook, approximately 18 stitches and 16 rows of half double crochet in 4โ€ณ x 4โ€ณ (10 cm x 10 cm).

Note the Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should select a yarn with a similar gauge to this version.

Yarn brand: Cotton Fair by Premier Yarns. Weight 2/Fine/Sport. 100g skein and 317 yards (or 290 m).

Approximately 1.8 skeins or 571 yards (or 522m) used for our garment (approximately XS) with a finished width of 17 inches and a finished length of 18 inches.

Color used is Succulent.

Substitutions: We would love to make this top again with

This weight 4/aran/worsted yarn by Yarnspirations.

This weight 3/light worsted/DK Bernat yarn.

4 mm crochet hook (US size 6). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. However our absolute favourite, slightly more pricey crochet hooks are clover crochet hooks. You can buy then in a set or individually. We started our collection just purchasing the size 4 ,5 and 6.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Jasper Easy Mesh Summer Crochet Top

Crochet the Main Back Panel

Chain a length that is equal to half your โ€œChest/Bust measurementโ€œ PLUS 1-3 inches (depending on how oversized you would like the top) AND is an ODD number of chains. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it and after you crochet a few rows, the total length of the top will be slightly larger than your chest/bust measurement providing some positive ease.

Kiks + Jack Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around so we chained 77 chains or a total relaxed length of 17 inches (32 inches/2 + 1 inch). We made sure it was an odd number. We added 1 inch for positive ease but not too oversized.

Row 1: ch2, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across the row.

Row 2: ch 4, turn, dc into the 3rd st, *ch1, sk next st, 1dc in next st, rep from * to end

Row 3: ch 4, turn, sk ch-1 sp, *1dc in next st (top of the dc), ch1, sk next st, rep from * to end with dc in the top of the tch

Kiks + Jack Tip: you are crocheting a dc into the top of each dc from the previous row creating mesh squares one on top of each other

Row 4: ch2, turn, *hdc in ch-1 sp, hdc in next st (top of the dc), rep from * to end finishing with a hdc in the top of the tch.

Row 5: ch2, turn, *hdc in each st across the row, hdc in tch

This is a good time to check that you are happy with the width of your top. Sometimes the yarn stretches out more or less than you expect. It’s important to check the width again before you go any further. Place it up against you after 5 rows of crochet and see if the width is correct for you (or measure it if you are making it for someone else). If your yarn is more stretchy than expected and/or you want to reduce the width, we suggest you frog (unravel) and start again reducing the number of chains you originally crocheted. Or if you decide you want it more oversized and you want to increase the width we suggest you frog and start again increasing the number of chains. It’s better to get this width right at the start.

Continue repeating rows 2 – 5 in that order until your panel reaches your “Finished Length measurementLESS 1-4 inches.

Kiks + Jack Example: Our “Finished Length measurement” equals 18 inches as we want the top to end just below our waist and slightly above our hips. We crochet rows 2-5 in that order until the panel reaches a total length of 17 inches (18 -1 inches). If you want a deeper neckline then deduct 2-4 inches ie. stop earlier

Do not fasten off.

Crochet the Front Panel

Repeat all the instructions under Back Panel to create an identical Front Panel.

Measure the Neckline

We will now measure out the square neckline for the two panels. Crocheting two panels first without the neckline allows you “try it on” (see below).

Measure approximately 4-6 inches in from the left edge of the back panel and place a stitch marker (we will be adjusting the exact inches that is right for you shortly). This will be the start of your neck opening.

Repeat the same on the right side of the back panel.

Repeat the same on the front panel on both sides.

Attach the two panels together lining up the 4 stitch markers and securing the panels together with the locking stitch markers. Place the panels over your head and double check you are happy with the neck opening. If you would like it tighter then move the stitch markers closer to your neck. If you would like the neck opening wider, then move the stitch markers away from your neck. Make sure it is the same distance (use a measuring tape) on either side and on the front and back panel.

Crochet the Neckline on the Back and and Front Panel

Now that we are happy with the neckline measurements, we will start to crochet it. Detach the two panels, however keep the four stitch markers on your panels. Start with the back panel and attach the yarn to the first stitch near the left shoulder. Crochet as follows:

Row 1: ch2, turn, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across the row up to the stitch marker. Turn.

Row 2: ch2, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across the row. Turn

Row 3: repeat row 2

Repeat row 2 until the total length is equal to your Finished Length Measurement.

Repeat on the other side of the back panel and both sides of the front panel, to complete the square neckline.

Fasten off.

Assembly and Preparation for Sleeves

Place the two panels together with the right side facing together and the wrong side facing outwards.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, seam the two shoulders together.

Starting from the top, measure the “Armhole Depth measurement” + 1 inch and place a stitch marker clipping both panels. This will mark the bottom of your sleeve opening under the armpit. Do the same on the other side of the top.

If you would prefer a more generous armhole depth, you can add 2 inches instead of 1 inch.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn seam the sides of your top together (make sure you are seaming on the wrong side and right sides are facing together). Start from the bottom edge and seam all the way up to the stitch markers.

Do the same on the other side.

You should now have two panels seamed together at the shoulders and the sides, with arm openings. We will now crochet the cap sleeves directly on.

Crochet the Cap Sleeves

Attach yarn near the stitch marker at the armpit and next to a mesh space. You will now be crocheting hdc around the sleeve opening.

Row 1: ch2, hdc into the mesh space, hdc into the next st (top of the mesh stitch), hdc into the next mesh space, hdc into first row of hdc, hdc into the second row of hdc. Continue this pattern until you have crocheted completely around the arm sleeve opening. At the end of the round, sl st to join at the top of the tch. Turn

Row 2: ch 4, dc into the 3rd st, *ch1, sk next st, 1dc in next st, rep from * until you reach the last st, sk st and sl st to join at top of the tch. Turn.

Row 3: ch2, *hdc into ch-sp, hdc in next st, rep from * to end with hdc into the last ch-sp, sl st to join at the top of the tch. Turn.

Row 4: repeat row 2

Fasten off.

Repeat the cap sleeve on the other side of the top.

Kiks + Jack Tip: If you would like the sleeves to be a little longer, you can crochet a few more rows in the same stitch pattern. Make sure you do the same number of rows on the other side of the sleeve so the two are identical.
