On a girls note, if you don’t like your bra strap showing consider crocheting this simple bra from Kiks + Jack in the exact same yarn as your top. Bras are REALLY fun to crochet and they are a lot cheaper than going out and purchasing a bra that will match your top exactly. Also on a side note we recently purchased these nipple covers for women on Amazon. They are amazing and work really well and we use them with our photography all the time.

One of the best things about the Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top (like all our patterns) is that it is made to measure. You wonโ€™t need to follow a set of rigid stitch counts to fit within a commercially sized XS – 5XL. Instead, the instructions guide you through creating a custom fit, using your own measurements and preferred yarn. It means you don’t have to worry about matching our gauge perfectly either.

The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top is a sleeveless crop top (length can be customized) with cute adjustable ribbons to tie at the top. Everything is fully customizable with this made to measure pattern. It features a contrasting side lace panel.

The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top pattern is fully made to measure, so you can crochet a top that fits your body perfectly. We use a soft, natural, breathable weight 2 yarn, however feel free to use any substitute that is of similar weight. This is a great beginner project and is very quick and easy.

CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES

The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet aims to design patterns that are made to measure. This approach celebrates the individuality of your body, something we believe in every DIY handmade piece. Unlike standard sizing, which confines you to a standard range from XS to 5XL, made-to-measure patterns let you define the fit using your actual measurements. Every body is unique, and we shouldnโ€™t have to conform to a size chart. We appreciate its needed for mass production, but preferably not for handmade clothing.

Note: we do appreciate sometimes we are crocheting for someone else, and have included some standard measurements for your convenience.

To use The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.

Finished length: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder. We wanted a cropped look, however if you would like to make this top longer you can take the measurement further down.

Length to armpit: Measure from where you would like the top to end up to bottom of your armpit

If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust โ€“ then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

Note: The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top is designed as a classic fit with limited positive ease although this can be adjusted.

CROCHET GAUGE for The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top

Note: The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version, but you do not need to match it exactly or start swatching.

Using a crochet hook size 3.5mm approximately 18 stitches and 24 rows of single crochets in 4โ€ณ x 4โ€ณ (10 cm x 10 cm).

We promise to only recommend products that we love and that we use. Thank you for supporting our small business.

Yarn brand Cotton Linen Bamboo LB Collection Weight 2/Fine/Sport. 50g per skein and 164 yards (or 150 m). Color used for our version is Shale

Approximately 3 skeins or 492 yards (or 450 m) used for our garment with a finished width of 15 inches wide and a finished length of 10 inches (excluding straps).

Due to the side panels, try to select a yarn that is around the same weight as ours (weight 2). Here are some other yarns we would love to use for this top:

Milla Mia Naturally Soft Cotton, Weight 2/Sport. 50g per skein

This yarn by Hobbii, weight 2/Fine/Sport

This Bernat yarn, weight 3/Light worsted/DK

3.5 mm crochet hook. We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We also love the slightly more pricey crochet hooks from clover crochet hooks. For this version we used the stunning Metal Furls Crochet Hooks. They have them in the most beautiful shades of pink blush, red, golden and silver in their streamline metal crochet hooks!

Yarn Winder!!! (Our new LOVE). We have held off on a yarn winder for a long time. We love the idea of crochet being simple with just a hook and some yarn. However we decided to get this yarn winder, because it was affordable and we weren’t sure about investing in a super fancy one yet. We love it because it breathes life back into scrappy yarn lying around that looks messy. It’s simple to use and is holding up really well for us.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY OF CROCHET CONSTRUCTION

The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top is made by first crocheting a front panel and an identical back panel. We will start by crocheting the two panels bottom up. When we have reached the desired length, we will crochet side lace panels directly on to the front panel and seam together to create a bandeau. We will then crochet straps directly on to the top that are adjustable and can be tied at the top.

The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top is a made to measure pattern and all sizing is adjustable.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top

Crochet the Front Panel

Calculate the length of your foundation chain as follows:

InstructionsKiks + Jack’s Example
Halve your “Chest/Bust MeasurementOur chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around
Half our chest/bust measurement = 32/2 = 16 inches
If you would like your top to be fitted you can reduce an inch and if you want more positive ease you you can add 1- 2 inches. We wanted a slightly fitted top so we reduced an inch
16 inches – 1 = 15 inches
Calculate 85% of this measurement (we want smaller front and back panels to accommodate for the side panels). You can round up if necessary.85% x 15 inches = 12.75 inches (or 0.85 x 15 = 12.75)
We rounded up to 13 inches

Chain a length as calculated above for the front panel and count the number of stitches. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it.

We want your total chain to be a multiple of 3 stitches. If it is not, add more chains to ensure your total chain ends on a multiple of 3 stitches.

Then add 1 more chain.

Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around and we have to chain 13 inches as per our calculation above. We reached 13 inches after chaining 65 chains. We add one more chain to give a total of 66 chains to achieve a multiple of 3 stitches, then we add 1 more chain for a total of 67 chains.

Row 1: ch2, [1sc, ch1, 1dc] into the 3rd ch from the hook, sk 2ch, *[1sc, ch1, 1dc], sk 2ch rep from * until end of the row and end on a sc in the last ch. Turn

Row 2: ch1, *[1sc, ch1, 1dc] into next ch-1 sp, rep from * until the last ch-1 sp at end of row, ending with 1sc in top of tch. Turn

Row 3-4: repeat row 2

Tip: Before continuing, take a moment to check that the width of your top is approximately equal to your calculation above. For example in our version we check if it is approximately 13 inches. Sometimes your yarn is more stretchy than expected and sometimes you just change your mind on fit, so it is great to conduct an intuitive check here. You do have some flexibility later on crocheting the side lace panels so using an approximate is fine. If you want to adjust the width, then start again reducing or increasing the length of the foundation chain making sure you follow all the stitch multiple rules.

Repeat row 2 until your top reaches a length equal to your “Length to armpit measurement”

Example: Our “length to armpit measurement” = 10 inches so we repeat row 2 until the length of the top reaches 10 inches.

Fasten off.

Crochet the Back Panel

Repeat all the instructions under Front Panel to create an identical Back Panel.

In Kiks + Jack’s version we now have two panels of approximately 13 inches wide and 10 inches long each.

Crochet the Side Lace Panels

We will now crochet the two side lace panels directly on to the front panel. When you crocheted the front panel you crocheted horizontally from side to side. Now you will be crocheting the side lace panels vertically from bottom to top and top to bottom etc.

First lets calculate the width of your side lace panels:

What is the total desired width of the top?Ours is 15 inches (see calculation above)
What is the total width of your front panel? Its helpful to measure it again.Ours is 13 inches
What is the width of one side panel? Deduct the two15 inches – 13 inches = 2 inches

Place the front panel right side up on the floor facing up to you. Let’s start with the right side. Attach a yarn to the bottom right side of the front panel.

Row 1: ch1, sc evenly from the bottom to the top (vertically) and end on a multiple of 6 + 1. Turn.

Kiks + Jack crocheted 42 + 1 (total = 43) single crochets (we used stitch markers to help us with crocheting evenly in multiples of 6 +1). Remember you are now crocheting vertically.

Row 2: ch1, sc in 1st st, *ch2, sk2, [dc, ch2, dc] in next st, ch2, sk2, sc in next st, rep from * across to end of row, ending with an sc in tch. Turn

Row 3: ch4 (counts as a tc), sk next ch-2 sp, *[2dc puff st, ch1, 2dc puff st, ch1, 2dc puff st] all in next ch-2 sp**, ch1, sk next 2 ch-2 sp, rep from * across ending at ** sk next ch-2 sp, tc in last sc. Turn

Tip: You are essentially crocheting the 2dc puff clusters in the centre of the [dc ch2 dc] cluster from the row below. Go back up to the section crochet stitches if you need help with a 2dc puff stitch.

Row 4: ch1, sc in 1st st, ch1, [sc, ch1] in each ch-1 sp across, ending with a sc in top of tch. Turn

Row 5: ch1, sc in 1st ch-1 sp, *ch1, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * ending with a sc in top of tch. Turn

Row 6: ch1, sc in 1st st, *ch2, sk next ch-1 sp, [dc, ch2, dc] in next st (ie. the stitch that sits directly above the centre of the 2dc puff cluster), ch2, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1sp, rep from * across row ending with ch2, sc in top of tch. Turn

Row 7: repeat row 3.

At this point take a measurement. Is your side panel wide enough? After Row 7, our side panel width was the required 2 inches we needed (based on our calculation and gauge). If not repeat rows 3-6 until your side panel is equal to your required width based on the calculation above.

Tip: You will be seaming these side panels later to the back panel. Try to finish on a row 4 or 5, or if you prefer you could single crochet across the top to make for a better seam, as you may find it hard to seam if you end on a row 3 or row 6.

Fasten off.

Repeat the instructions on the left side of your front panel.

You should now have a front panel with 2 side lace panels crocheted directly on to the front panel, and a separate back panel.

Assembly of The Lace, Bows & Ribbons Summer Crochet Top

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking all your panels before assembly. We block our panels by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely dry.

Turn the front panel (with the two side panels) wrong side facing up.

Using matching yarn and a yarn needle, seam the back panel (wrong side facing up) to the side panels. You should now have a tube/bandeau made up of a front panel, two side panels and a back panel.

Crochet the Straps

Turn the bandeau right side up and so that the front panel is facing you and the back panel is lying directly behind the front panel.

Place two stitch markers at the front of the top and at the back of the top where you would like the straps. You can put the bandeau on to see where it would be most comfortable.

Lets start with the right stitch marker on the front panel.

Attach a yarn, 3 stitches before the stitch marker.

Row 1: ch1, sc across the next 6 st (ie towards the SM and past the SM). Turn

Row 2: ch1, sc in 1st st, sc across until the end of the row/strap. Turn

Repeat row 2 until the strap is approximately 22-25 inches. This will give you large-ish bows that drape down over the shoulder.

Fasten off.

Do the same on all sides so you have 4 x straps that can be tied into a bow at the top. Test it out and if necessary add to or frog the straps if you feel like they need to be adjusted to your preferred bow size.
