Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt Free Pattern

The Manley Striped Easy Fitted Crochet Skirt Free Pattern

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure and size inclusive. It is designed to be intuitive and is written for beginners.

This pattern has been re-written and re-designed as a made to measure pattern. Kiks + Jack Crochet is converting its commercially sized patterns (eg S, M, L, XL etc) into made to measure patterns. We believe that if you are going to take all this time to crochet your own beautiful clothing, then it should fit perfectly to your desired measurements.

If you found this blog from our blue and white version…yes you are in the right place!

The Manley Striped Easy Fitted Crochet Skirt Free Pattern

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is the perfect pattern to write as a “made to measure” as you can keep trying it on to check everything is a perfect fit and we are so happy to have converted this pattern.

We admit…we crocheted this skirt short! So we want to blog right up front that the length (along with everything else) is totally customizable! We love stripes in the summer and had so much fun taking a break from sweaters and cardigans. Whenever you wear a crocheted skirt out, there is a good chance you are going to get asked, “Where did you buy it?” People are delighted (and a little disappointed) to hear it was made at home.

We are really trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website (and there are lots!) through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a coffee here, you buy us a cup of motivation telling us; “This can work! Please keep designing, writing and photographing patterns for free!”. Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you.

This is a great beginner piece and something you can whip up quickly in time for beach weather. We designed this skirt to be something fun and casual for summer! We wear ours with white sneakers and flip flops!

Do you love this bright yellow? If you are looking for a totally different vibe, pick a solid darker colour, lengthen the skirt and team it with one of the crochet short sleeved tops for summer nights. Wear it with any of the crochet crop tops or bra top designs like the Magnolia Lacy Crochet Bra Top or The Sentosa V Neck Crop Crochet Top. We have also designed a matching crop top and you can find the matching Manley Striped Crochet Crop Top here.

For our yellow version, we used a pretty stretchy cotton yarn from Loops & Threads. It is absolutely perfect for this design and any light garment that requires a stretch. It is 57% cotton, 28% nylon and 15% polyester and this blend is what gives it the needed spring. This yarn has also been used in crop tops where you want a more fitted top. Check out the Cottesloe Beach Waves Crochet Crop Top that uses the same yarn. You can find all the details under the section “Crochet Materials”.

If you are unable to find this yarn, consider any stretchy medium weight 4 yarn like premium acrylic. We used this for our blue and white version and again you can find all the details below.

DESCRIPTION of The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is a tight short skirt similar to a pencil skirt design. The ribbed waistline gives the skirt a polished look and the stripes keep it casual. It is an easy design for beginners and the length is customizable.

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is a made to measure, size inclusive, and beginner friendly pattern. It can accommodate different yarn gauges.

CROCHET MEASUREMENTS & SIZES

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements. This pattern has been recently converted from a grade size pattern to a made to measure.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurements for those who wish to use it.

To use the Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Waist Measurement: Measure your waist at the smaller circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button

Hip Measurement: Measure at the widest part of your lower hip

Skirt Length Measurement: Measure from your waist down to your desired length anywhere above your knee.

If you would like to use standard sizing for the waist – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately: 23-24 (25-26.5, 28-30, 32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-45, 46-47, 49-50) inches or 59-61 (64-68, 71-76, 82-87, 92-97. 101.5-106.5, 111.5-114, 116.5-119, 124-127) centimetres.

If you would like to use standard sizing for the hips – then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately: 33-34 (35-36, 38-40, 42-44, 46-48, 52-53, 54-55, 56-57, 61-62) inches or 84-86 (89-92, 97-102, 117-122, 117-122, 132-134, 137-140, 142-144, 155-157) centimetres.

Note the Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is designed as a close tight fit. The waist band is designed to sit slightly below the waist.

CROCHET GAUGE for The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt

Yellow version: using a hook 5.5mm, approximately 14 stitches and 9 rows of double crochets in 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm).

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt pattern can accommodate for yarns with different gauges, however try to select a yarn and hook with a gauge similar to this version.

CROCHET MATERIALS for The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt

Yarn brand: Capri Cotton by Loops & Threads. Weight 4/Aran/Worsted. 100g skein and 174 yards (or 160m).

If crocheting one solid colour, we would use approximately 2.1 skeins for a size XS: approximately 16 inches wide and 14 inches tall. We used two colours approximately 70% yellow and 30% white ie. 2 skeins of yellow and 1 skein of white.

If you can’t find this yarn we used a premium acrylic from Patons found here for our blue and white version. We used 2 skeins for our XS. We used colours Aran and Blue Cloud.

5.5 mm crochet hook (US size 9). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and the shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. However our absolute favourite, slightly more pricey crochet hooks are clover crochet hooks. You can buy them in a set or individually.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors

SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION

The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt is made by first crocheting a ribbing and joining together at the seam. We then continue to crochet the main part of the skirt by crocheting in the round. We will shape around the hips and change yarn colour upon each row to create a striped effect.

The skirt length can be easily crocheted longer at the end. This pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different gauges.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Manley Striped Easy Crochet Fitted Skirt

Crochet the Ribbed Waist Band

Start with Color 1 (eg. yellow)

ch 21 (21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21 )

Note chaining 21 gave us a width of approximately 3 inches. The number of chains you require to reach 3 inches is dependant on your gauge.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across.

Row 2: ch1, turn, BLO sc across, sc into the entire last st. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until the entire length of your ribbing reaches your “Waist Measurement”.

Do not fasten off as you will now join the two ends of the ribbing together. Bring the start of the ribbing around to meet the end of the ribbing.

Customization Tip: You may want to try it on and see if the ribbing fits comfortably. The design is supposed to sit slightly below your belly button. Make sure the band fits comfortably around your waist. If you want to increase the circumference of the ribbed waist band crochet more of Row 2. If the ribbed waist band is too loose, then frog (unravel) a few row 2s.

Join the two ends of the ribbing together

Insert your hook into the first stitch next to the hook. Line up the the same stitch on the other end of the ribbing and insert your hook into this stitch too. Join the two stitches together with a slip stitch. Continue to do this for the rest of the ribbing ie. slip stitching across all the stitches so the ribbing is finally joined together.

Tip: You could also join the ribbing together by seaming the ends together using a yarn needle and matching yarn. You may find this easier.

You have now finished the ribbed waist band.

Do not fasten off. Turn your ribbing so that you can crochet across the long side of the ribbing to create the main part of the skirt.

Crochet the top part of the skirt

You will now crochet underneath your ribbed waistband to create the main part of the skirt.

Continue using colour 1 (eg. yellow)

Row 1: ch1 (place a stitch marker for reference), sc in each row across, sl st to join at the top of the tch (where you placed your stitch marker). Turn

Row 2: ch2 (place a stitch marker for reference), hdc in the 1st st, hdc around, sl to join at the top of the tch (where you placed your stitch marker). Turn

Row 3: repeat row 2

Change colour (eg. white). Here is a tip about changing colour. Do not fasten off each time you change the colour. Just leave it hanging and start the next colour. When it’s time to change back to the first colour (after 1 row) just bring the yarn up to the new row and start crocheting.

Row 4: ch3 (place a stitch marker for reference), dc into 2nd st, dc around, sl st to join at the top of the turning chain (where you placed your stitch marker). Turn

Important Note: With the blue and white version of our skirt (using premium acrylic vs cotton) we found that a half double crochet stitch looked better than a double crochet stitch. The double crochet stitch worked well for the yellow cotton version as it gave more drape, however with the premium acrylic yarn (blue and white version) we felt a half double crochet stitch gave more structure. In other words, we crocheted the blue skirt as Row 4: ch2, hdc into 1st st, hdc around, sl to join. Turn (and we used the half double crochet wherever the pattern says double crochet). Depending on your choice of yarn you may want to experiment and be consistent with your choice of stitch throughout the rest of the pattern.

Repeat row 4 until you are ready to start shaping for the hips. ie. we will expand the skirt to accommodate for your hips. Every body shape is different and we suggest you try on your “skirt” after row 4. As your waist starts to get wider and move into your hips it is the right time to start shaping for the hips. For Kiks + Jack’s version we started expanding after row 4.

Remember to change your yarn colour after every row.

Shape the skirt for the hips

Lie your skirt flat in front of you with the slip stitches (where you start your turned row) to the right side. Place a stitch marker in the slip stitch on the right side and place a stitch marker on the left side. When you lie your skirt flat in front of you, you should now have a stitch marker at each end of your skirt where we will start shaping for the hips.

Remember to change your yarn colour after every row.

Shaping Row: ch3, 2dc into the 2nd st, 1dc around until you reach the second stitch marker, 2dc into the st with the 2nd stitch marker (replace the stitch marker), 1dc around until you reach the first stitch marker, sl st to join at the top of tch.

Repeat this “Shaping Row” and try the skirt on after every few rows. You are increasing each row by 2 stitches and therefore increasing the width of the skirt to accommodate for the hips. When you have increased the width of the skirt to fit the widest part of your hips you can move to the next section “Crochet the bottom of the skirt”.

Do not fasten off.

Crochet the bottom of the skirt

After you have crocheted enough rows so that the skirt fits comfortably over your hips, you will crochet rows without shaping (ie. without the stitch increases).

Non Shaping Row: ch 3, turn, dc into next stitch, dc across, sl st to join at the top of the turning chain. Remember to colour change at the end of each row.

Customization Tip: You should try the skirt on now and see if you like the length. If you would like to make the skirt longer, crochet a few more rows until you reach the desired length. This pattern is best for a length at or above the knees.

Fasten off.

Finish & Celebrate the Manley Striped Crochet Fitted Skirt

Weave in all your ends.

We suggest blocking your skirt using block pins. We like to use an old yoga mat, saturate the skirt with water and pin the skirt to shape. We then let it dry completely.
