Beach Crochet Tank Top Free Pattern

Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top Free Pattern

The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and designed to be intuitive and beginner friendly.

Note: The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top has recently been updated to a made to measure pattern. At Kiks + Jack Crochet we believe that if you are going to take the time to make your own clothes, then they should fit you perfectly according to your own personal measurements. As a result we are slowly updating all our patterns to made to measure designs.

The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top is a fun colourful top that is perfect for summer! It works up quickly and is perfect for beginners that want to try a varying stitch pattern. We used a gorgeous beachy self striping yarn. We just went with the flow and let the yarn take us where it wanted to. We love how it turned out. Slightly deconstructed, super casual and perfect for the beach!

We used one of our favourite stitches to add some change to the pattern. The bead stitch creates lovely drape to the top while providing some fun stitch detail. The V neck and shoulder straps flatter every body type and keep this piece modern, versatile and fresh for your summer days and nights!

We also love how you can layer on other crocheted pieces with this top. When the summer nights get a little cold and windy, throw on a crocheted cardigan, kept open so you can still see The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top. Looking for some great cardigans to match it with? Take a look at the Victoria Easy Chunky Crochet Cardigan or for something lighter, The Campbell Every Day Crochet Cardigan.

You can also crochet it oversized and wear it over a crocheted bra or a bikini like the Magnolia Lacy Crochet Bra Top or The Bondi Beach Crochet Bra Top.

The Sentosa Beach Crochet Crop Top Free Pattern

The Sentosa Beach V Neck Crop Crochet Top has been crocheted from a beautiful yarn by Yarnspirations. Its a weight 3/Light/Light Worsted and 100% cotton. We LOVE crocheting with this yarn! It’s self striping and its so exciting when a new colour starts! You can find all the details regarding this yarn including some recommended substitutions below in “Crochet Materials”.

The other thing we loved about this yarn was the wonderful textured feel. Crocheting with it, is really meditative. We love it when the yarn and stitch move together in one fluid and (almost) continuous motion. We find that if the yarn or the stitch is too rigid and feels uneasy, the garment is going to sit in our unfinished pile for a long time.

We used the colour, “Wildflowers” as it reminded us of the beach: blues for the ocean, yellow for the sand, and pink for the flowers!

DESCRIPTION of the The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top

The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top is a sleeveless tank top with two stitch patterns. The neckline is a V neck design. It features simple shoulder straps that are crocheted directly on to the front of the top. It is an easy design for beginners and the length is customizable.

This is a free and easy crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and beginner friendly. The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top primarily uses the half double crochet stitch and the bead stitch. This pattern has been recently updated from grade sizing to a made to measure pattern.

CROCHET MEASUREMENTS & SIZES for The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top

The pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.

Note: The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top has recently been updated to a made to measure pattern. At Kiks + Jack Crochet we believe that if you are going to take the time to make your own clothes, then they should fit you perfectly according to your personal measurements.

Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure” (versus graded sized patterns) so that crocheters can get the wonderful benefits of making a garment that fits perfectly. However we do appreciate taking measurements can be inconvenient for some and have also provided standard measurements for those who wish to use it.

To use the Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.

Finished length: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder. We wanted a slightly cropped look so we took the measurement from the waistline, however if you want something longer you can take the measurement from the hips.

Length to armpit: Measure from where you would like the top to end up to bottom of your armpit

If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust โ€“ then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.

Note: Designed as a classic fit with some positive ease although this can be adjusted.

CROCHET GAUGE

Using a crochet hook 4 (US size 6), approximately 14 stitches and 12 rows of half double crochet stitch in 4โ€ณ x 4โ€ณ (10 cm x 10 cm)

Note The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version.

Yarn brand: Caron Cotton Ripple Cakes from Yarnspirations. Weight 3/Light/Light Worsted. 240g per skein and 491 yards (or 449 metres). Kiks + Jack crocheted a size XS with a finished width of 16 inches and a finished length of 14 inches (without straps) and used approximately 368 yards (or 337m).

Color used for our version of The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top is Wildflowers.

Some other great yarn that we would love to use as a alternative are:

This soft cotton baby yarn from Bernat.

This bamboo cotton from Lion Brand Yarn (although this will give you a lot more drape and less structure as our version)

4 mm crochet hook (US size 6). We use many different crochet hooks and some of them can get quite pricey – but if you are a beginner and looking for some great budget friendly ergonomic crochet hooks try these from Amazon. It comes in a set and the grip and shape is amazing for beginner crocheters. We love these and recommend them to all our crochet friends.

Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.

Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.

Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.

Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!

Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.

SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION for The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top

The Sentosa Beach V Neck Crochet Crop Top is made by first crocheting a front panel and an identical back panel. We will start by crocheting the panel bottom up. We will shape for the arm openings and at the same time for the V neck. We will crochet the straps directly on to the tank top. We will seam the two panels together and attach the back end of the strap to the inside back of the top.

This pattern has been updated to a made to measure pattern. This does not affect the construction, however the stitch count will be based on your own measurements.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top

Crochet the Front Panel

Calculate the length of your foundation chain as follows:

Halve your “Chest/Bust MeasurementOur chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around
Half our chest/bust measurement = 32/2 = 16 inches
If your yarn has a lot of stretch or you want it to be fitted, you can leave this measurement as is. Alternatively if you would like a more oversized top you can add an 1-2 inches. We will check this again after a few rows.We chose to not add additional inches.

Chain a length as calculated above and count the number of stitches. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it.

We want your total chain to be an odd number of stitches. If your chain is not an odd number of stitches then add one more stitch to make it an odd number of stitches.

Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around and we have to chain 16 inches as per our calculation above. We reached 16 inches after chaining 70 chains. We add one more chain to give a total of 71 chains to achieve an odd number of stitches.

Row 1: ch2, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in each st across to the end. Turn.

Row 2: ch2, hdc in the first st, hdc across to the end. Turn

Row 3-5: repeat row 2

Row 6: ch3, BS into 3rd st, *sk st, BS into next st, rep* across the row, ending with 1dc into the last st. Turn

Bead Stitch (BS): 1dc into the required st. *[Yarn over, insert hook behind the post of the dc from right to left, and pull up a loop]. You should have 3 loops on the hook. Repeat * around the same dc post. You should now have 5 loops on the hook. Repeat * one more time around the same dc post. You should now have 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through first 6 loops. Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Row 7: ch2, hdc in the 1st st, *hdc in st at top of bead, hdc between beads, rep from * across the row ending with a hdc in top of tch

Row 8-11: repeat row 2 (hdc row)

Row 12: repeat row 6 (BS row)

Repeat rows 7-12 until your panel is equal to your “Length to Armpit Measurement“. Try to end on a row 6 (bead stitch row) as the remainder of the V neck will be half double crochet rows.

Do not fasten off.

Crochet the Front Panel – Shaping for the V Neck

We will now shape for the V neck and the arm opening.

Tip: Up until this point, you may have not changed colours as the yarn was self striping. However for the V neck, you may want to cut the yarn and change the colour to match the width of each stripe in the main panel.

Using a tape measure, find the halfway centre point of your top and place a stitch marker at this point.

Using the working yarn start on Row 1 heading towards the stitch marker (centre of the top).

Row 1: ch2, hdc2tog the first two st, hdc across (towards the stitch marker) until the last two st, hdc2tog the last 2st (remove the stitch marker). Turn

Row 2: ch2, hdc2tog the first two st, hdc across (away from the centre) until the last two st, hdc2tog the last 2st.

Repeat row 1 and row 2 until you are left with a total of 3 or 4 stitches in the row (remember to check if you need to do colour changes to match the width of the stripe in your main panel). If you have 3 stitches in the row, move on to the instructions below for straps. If you have 4 stitches in the row, then ch2, turn, hdc2tog the first 2 st, hdc across to end with 3 stitches in the row.

Do not fasten off.

Crochet the Front Panel – Straps

You should now have 3 stitches in the row.

Row 1: ch1, turn, sc across the row

Repeat row 1 until the strap is long enough to go to the top of your shoulder. Add one more row for seaming.

Fasten off.

Crochet the Front Panel – Shaping and Straps on the other side

Attach a matching yarn on the other side of the front panel at the edge. If you want the colour stripe to match the V neck on the other side then you need to switch colours as you crochet the V neck to match your pattern.

Repeat all the instructions above under “Crochet the Front Panel – shaping for the V neck” and “Crochet the Front Panel – Straps“.

Your front panel is now complete with a main body, a V neck and two straps.

Back Panel

Repeat all the instructions under Front Panel. Include straps on your Back Panel that are the same length as your Front Panel.

Tip: If you want your stripes from the front to match your back, then make sure you switch the colours in your self-striping yarn so that they match in colour and width. If this doesn’t bother you, then feel free to crochet wherever the self striping yarn takes you.

ASSEMBLING & FINISHING the Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top

Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking all your panels before assembling the Sentosa Beach Crochet Tank Top. Blocking your panels will set your panels to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look.

We block our panels by pinning all the pieces on to an old yoga mat and manipulating the shape and edges so the front and back panel are similar. We then spray it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely bone dry.

Place the two panels together with the right side facing together and the wrong side facing outwards.

Seam together the left side and the right side using a yarn needle.

Place the top on and using stitch markers, secure the straps from the front panel to the back panel at the top of your shoulders.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the two straps to the back panel on the inside (wrong side) of your top.

Weave in all your ends.
