The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top is an easy free crochet pattern that is made to measure, size inclusive and designed to be intuitive and beginner friendly. The full instructions are free for you to view below.
If you are looking for a quick, fun, and beginner-friendly crochet project for summer, this easy crochet tank top pattern might just be your new favourite make. This made to measure crochet top is designed to fit you perfectly and best of all it is fast, easy and interesting to crochet.

The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top is designed to be simple and easy to wear – really..that is the basis for all our designs! It’s a basic (and beautiful) crochet fitted tank top with slightly frilly straps. We added the wavy straps to give a playful, textured detail that makes this top feel gorgeous without being too complicated. Itโs the kind of project that looks impressive, but is surprisingly easy to crochet, even if you’re just starting out.
For this version, we used Furls Wander yarn, which was generously gifted to us by Furls Crochet, along with two of their absolutely stunning crochet hooks (these are the kind of tools that make you want to keep crocheting). We used five different shades of yarn. We admit, we were a little worried about how the colors would match together – but we took a risk and we think they worked beautifully together. The gorgeous shades we selected are; Camel yellow, Agave green, Fawn brown, Dragonfruit red, and Moonbeam white (who comes up with these beautiful names??). Each shade adds a soft, summery vibe to the final piece.
We have crocheted with this yarn before during winter and loved the drape! Check out The Wanderers Relaxed Fit Crochet Sweater and The Wanderers Relaxed Fit Crochet Cardigan!
Just a super quick call out to Furls Instagram page too. If you are a crochet nerd like us, you will want to check out their photography. It’s crazy how they can make a crochet hook look so stunning in their gorgeous photography. We suggested they put it all together in a beautiful photography book ๐

One of the things we love most about The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top is how quickly it works up. The pattern uses simple stitches, and because it’s a tank top, it doesnโt take much time to complete. Perfect for weekend making or a last-minute handmade gift. If youโve been wanting to build your summer crochet wardrobe, this top is a great place to start. We have been throwing ours over a pair of jeans or shorts for a relaxed beach day, or layering it under a button-up shirt or light cardigan for the evenings.
Because itโs made to measure, youโll get a fit that actually suits your body, which is something we all deserve from our handmade clothes. You donโt need to worry about standard sizes or complicated shapingโjust follow along and customize as you go.

CROCHET MEASUREMENT & SIZES
The pattern instructions are made to measure, based on your required measurements.
Kiks + Jack Crochet will always try to write patterns that are “made to measure”. One of the best things about made to measure crochet patterns is that it celebrates the uniqueness of your bodyโsomething we all deserve from our handmade clothes. Unlike commercial sizing, which categorizes everyone into a limited range from XS to 5XL, made to measure patterns let you decide the fit based on your actual measurements. Every body is different, and we shouldn’t have to shape ourselves to fit a size chart. Let’s leave that to the big box storesโhandmade should be personal.
To use this pattern you will need the following measurements and you should write them down for easy reference:
Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust. Do not draw the tape too tightly.
Finished length: Measure from your waistline (or where you would like the top to end) up to the top of your shoulder. We wanted a cropped look, however if you would like to make this top longer you can take the measurement further down.
Length to armpit: Measure from where you would like the top to end up to bottom of your armpit
If you would like to use standard sizing for the chest/bust โ then for XS (S, M , L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) use approximately 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62) inches or 71-76 (81-86, 91-96, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158) centimetres.
Note: The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank is designed as a classic fit with limited positive ease although this can be adjusted.
CROCHET GAUGE for The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top
Note: The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top pattern is made to measure and can accommodate for different crochet gauges. However you should try to select a yarn and hook with a similar gauge to this version.
Using a crochet hook size 4.5mm approximately 16 stitches and 18 rows of single crochets in 4โณ x 4โณ (10 cm x 10 cm).

Yarn brand Wander by Furls Fiber Arts. Weight 4/Medium/Worsted. 100g per skein and 120 yards (or 109 m). Color used for our version of The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top is Agave, Camel, Moonbeam, Dragonfruit and Fawn.
Our instructions are based on using 5 different colors. However if you would like to change this you should use an odd number of colors.
Approximately 324 yards (or 295 m) used for our garment with a finished width of 16 inches wide and a finished length of 10 inches and straps. If we were to crochet this in one solid color it would be equal to 2.7 skeins. However we used 5 colors and therefore required 1 skein of each color.
4.5 mm crochet hook and 4 mm crochet hook (for strap). For this version we used the stunning Metal Furls Crochet Hooks. They have them in the most beautiful shades of pink blush, red, golden and silver in their streamline metal crochet hooks!
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colourful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t). Don’t carry these without the case! After you use thread snippers you won’t want to snip with scissors.
CROCHET STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS
ch = chain
sc = single crochet (Insert hook into desired stitch. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all two loops)
sp = space (eg. crochet into the space and not the stitch)
ch-1 sp = chain 1 space
tch = turning chain
st = stitch
sk = skip stitch (sk st)
* = repeat the instructions following the * as directed
Note unless stated otherwise turning chains do not count as a stitch if there are 1 or 2 chains and the turning chain does count as a stitch if there are 3 or 4 chains.
SUMMARY OF CROCHET CONSTRUCTION
The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top is made by first crocheting a main body panel. We start by crocheting bottom up. When we have reached the desired length, we will seam the side. Next we will measure out the crochet straps and sew them directly on to the top.
This top is constructed primarily using the single crochet and 5 different colours to create a 5-colored stitch. You will be crocheting into spaces making it a quick and easy crochet project. You will draw each coloured yarn up the sides as you switch the colours.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top
Crochet the Panel
For our version we used 5 colors in this order:
Yarn A = Camel Yellow
Yarn B = Dragonfruit Red
Yarn C = Fawn Brown
Yarn D = Agave Green
Yarn E = Moonbeam White
Calculate the length of your foundation chain as follows:
Take your “Chest/Bust Measurement“ | Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around |
If you would like your top to be fitted you can leave the measurement as is. If your yarn has a lot of stretch you can reduce by 1 inch. If you would like a more oversized top you can add an inch. We will check this again after a few rows. | We chose to not add additional inches as our yarn was not too stretchy and we wanted a tight fit. ie we will keep our measurement to 32 inches. |
Use the larger hook (we used our 4.5mm hook).
Using Yarn A, chain a length as calculated above and count the number of stitches. Do not pull the chain too tight when you measure it. Tip: There will probably be quite a number of stitches to form your foundation chain so it may be helpful to place a stitch marker on every 20th chain to help with counting.
We want your total chain to be an even number of stitches. If your chain is not an even number of stitches then add one more stitch.
Example: Our chest/bust measurement = 32 inches around and we reached this after chaining 148 chains – an even number so we leave it as is.
Row 1 (continue with Yarn A): 1sc in 4th ch from hook (counts as a st and ch1), *ch1, sk st, 1sc in next st, rep from * across the row ending with an sc in the last st. Turn.
Drop Yarn A, do not fasten off. Take Yarn B, and draw through the last Yarn A loop.
Row 2: With Yarn B, ch2 (counts as a st and ch1), sk st, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, sk st, rep from * across, ending with 1sc in last ch-1 sp. Turn.
Drop Yarn B do not fasten off. Take Yarn C and draw through the last Yarn B loop.
Row 3: Using Yarn C, repeat row 2.
Check if you are completely happy with the width of the top before you crochet any further. You may want to wrap it around your bust after approximately 3 rows of crochet to see if you want to make changes to the width. If it’s perfect keep going. If you would like to make changes to the width, it is best to start again increasing or decreasing the number of chains that you originally used.
Important Tip: We suggest you “detangle” your yarn after you complete each row. We had our skeins lined up in a row and simply moved them one by one to the end ensuring the 5 skeins were always detangled. If you adjust your skeins after each row it is an easy process, as it can get quite tangled after a few rows.
Drop Yarn C do not fasten off. Take Yarn D and draw through the last loop.
Row 4: Using Yarn D, repeat row 2.
Drop Yarn D do not fasten off. Take Yarn E and draw through the last loop.
Row 5: Using Yarn E, repeat row 2.
Drop Yarn E do not fasten off. Take Yarn A and bring it up the sides and draw through the last loop. As you draw Yarn A up the sides do not draw it too tight so your panel buckles, but do not draw it too loose so that it makes it difficult to seam in later.
Row 6: Using Yarn A, repeat row 2.
Repeat row 2 alternating yarn colours A, B, C, D and E in that order. Draw the yarn up the sides as you require each colour ie do not fasten and cut off after each row until the very end. Remember to detangle your yarns after each row. Continue to do this until your top reaches the Length to Armpit Measurement.
At this point it is helpful to conduct an intuitive check. Place the front panel up against you and check you are happy with the length. If you would like it to be a little longer you can add a few more rows. Alternatively if you have changed your mind and would like it a bit shorter, frog a few rows.
Fasten off your last stitch and cut of the other four yarns leaving some tails to weave in.
Assembly of The Colorful Crochet Summer Tank Top
Kiks + Jack Crochet highly recommends blocking your panel before seaming. Blocking your panel will set your panel to the shape and size you want and give it a polished look. We block by pinning pieces on to an old yoga mat and spraying it with water focusing on the edges and ensuring it is well saturated. Do not remove the pins until the panels are completely dry.
Fold the panel so that the right sides are together and the wrong side facing out.
Using matching yarn and a yarn needle, seam down the side. We selected Fawn as it was the most neutral color to seam. As we seamed we kept checking the right side to make sure yarns and ends were pulled in and sewn into the seam.
You should now have a tube/bandeau.
Crochet the Straps
Use the smaller hook (we used a 4.0mm crochet hook).
Select the color you would like for your straps. We selected Camel for a more summery feel.
Put on the crochet tube. Using a measuring tape (and some help) measure from the top of your crochet tube over your shoulder and to the other side. Add an additional 2 inches for seaming. If you are crocheting for someone else you may want to use the Finished Length Measurement to help estimate the length of the straps.
Chain a length equal to this strap measurement (don’t forget the extra 2 inches for seaming). You need to finish on a multiple of 4.
Add 1 more chain.
Row 1: ch1, sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in each ch across until end of row. Turn
Row 2: ch1, *sk2, [sc, ch3, sc] in next st, rep from * until you reach the end of the row. Do not turn.
You will now crochet the same stitch pattern on the other side. The [sc, ch3, sc] clusters should be directly opposite each other and align on each side. To get to the other side, sc into the tch, and sc around the “corner” until you reach the stitch directly opposite the [sc,ch3,sc] cluster on the other side.
Row 3 (on the other side): [sc, ch3, sc] into next st, *sk2, [sc, ch3, sc] in next st, rep from * until you reach the end of the row ending with an sc. Fasten off.
Place your crochet tube back on. Using locking stitch markers (you may need some assistance), attach the two straps to the back side of your top so that the top and straps feel comfortable and secure. Using a yarn needle, sew the two straps firmly to the inside back of the top.
