The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket pattern was originally designed as part of our collaboration with Hobbii and is now available here on Kiks + Jack Crochet as a free crochet pattern. We’re excited to bring this design back to our blog and our crochet community. The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket is our first crochet blanket pattern and we are so excited to release it on our blog. It isn’t exactly a “wearable”, however we figured it was OK to break the rules because we love this blanket SO much! We made it and gifted it to a family member. It was so meaningful to them and there was no way a store bought blanket could have ever matched up.
The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket is designed a little differently to regular crochet blankets. If you have read our bio you will know that one of our FAVE things about crochet is creating during little pockets of time throughout the day. It allows us to turn our “dead time” into creative time – and not all hobbies can do that! Whether we’re waiting for an appointment, chatting with family on a hands-free phone call, or watching sport, we can always sneak in some crochet in our bag.

We are trying to keep all our crochet patterns free for everyone, when you access them online. We meet the costs of running this website through coffee donations at https://ko-fi.com/kiksandjackcrochet and ad revenue. When you buy us a cup of coffee, you support a community of crocheters that use this blog. Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired every day to keep designing free crochet patterns for you to view at our blog online.
However it’s also why we have avoided making large, over sized blankets. While we love nothing more than a huge snugly blanket, they can quickly become difficult to carry around as they grow (its also why we typically crochet garments in separate pieces too). So we designed a blanket that allowed us to crochet in pieces and sections so we could take it along in our bag wherever we go. The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket is worked in smaller sections that can be tucked into your bag, making it the perfect project for all the busy crafters who crochet on the go!
The other thing we wanted to change up is the monotony of crocheting a blanket with the same stitch pattern throughout. We actually love how beautiful it looks, but honestly… we get REALLY bored and it ends up in our WIP pile (not helpful). So we knew if we were going to design a big huge blanket it was going to have keep us engaged and interested so we could actually get to the finish line. The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket combines different stitches, textures, colors and …. granny squares!! Not only is each section SO much fun to make we never get bored. The textures ended up looking and and feeling great and our gift recipient (who admittedly doesn’t crochet ha ha) was SO impressed and thought it was so luxurious and complex (which it really isn’t).

For our version, we chose a lightweight cotton yarn (weight 2) and held it double stranded. The double strands brought the yarn up to approximately a weight 4 but crocheting two strands together created this slightly thicker puffy cozy fabric with a beautiful softness. It was so beautiful and squishy to touch.
We have used this gorgeous cotton blend yarn before. Check them out here:

CROCHET MEASUREMENTS & SIZES for The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket
Our version of The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket after blocking is: Width: 97 cm / 38.1” and Length: 200 cm /78.8”.
CROCHET GAUGE
We used a weight 2 yarn double stranded and a 5mm crochet hook for our version of The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket.
The gauge is 14 sc x 18 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm / 4” x 4” (double stranded).
Please note that this pattern will be crocheting to stitch count vs dimensions. However free to use a yarn and hook with a slightly different gauge (try to stay close to a weight 3/4 yarn and a hook 5) although the dimensions of your blanket may be slightly different. If you are using a slightly different gauge and crocheting to your own preferred dimensions we will give you tips along the way.

Yarn brand: Twister Solid. Weight 2/Fine, 100g per skein and 437 yards (or 400m) per skein
We used 3 colors for this blanket: 4 skeins of Dutch Blue, 7 skeins of Cream and 1 skein of Silver Grey. Note we double stranded the yarn. The total weight of our blanket is 1060 g (or 10.6 skeins of twister solid if we were to crochet this in one solid color)
Some yarns that we would love to try with this pattern (note that using a different yarn may alter the dimensions of the blanket)
Cotton Sprout by Premier Yarns (weight 3) – not double stranded
Heartland Yarn by Lion Brand Yarns (weight 4) – not double stranded
5 mm crochet hook (US size 8). We use many different crochet hooks and if you are looking for some great budget friendly crochet hooks try these from Susan Bates. We also love the slightly more pricey crochet hooks from Clover Crochet Hooks and the beautiful Furls Crochet Hooks (these are so stunning, we just love looking at them!)
Measuring Tape. We use a super budget friendly measuring tape. Make sure it has cm and inches (not all patterns are written with both). We are always crocheting on the go so we like our tapes small and compact and we put one in our design area, one in our bag and one in our car. Retractable works best! We use these super cheap mini measuring tapes from Amazon.
Stitch Markers. We use these locking crochet stitch markers from Amazon and these stitch markers that do not lock. They are cheap and colorful.
Blocking Pins. You should buy more pins than you think you need. If you are going to take the time to block don’t skimp on the pins. We like T shaped stainless steel pins that don’t rust when they get wet. We love these blocking T pins from Amazon and the tin means the pins don’t fall out on the floor.
Yarn Needle. Buy blunt needles with large eyes for yarn. We use these Yarn Needles because we like the convenient bottle, they are budget friendly and we get lots of them!
Scissors. We love these thread snippers because they are cheap, we get two of them AND they come with a case (some don’t).

SUMMARY of CONSTRUCTION for The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket.
The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket is designed in smaller sections so you can easily carry your project with you and enjoy crocheting on the go. You’ll begin by making granny squares, which are quick and easy to take along wherever you crochet. Once the squares are complete, you’ll work the blanket in five separate sections that remain lightweight and portable throughout the process.
Four of the sections are made with a row of eight granny squares combined with two cream-colored panels, while the fifth section is made using two cream-colored panels only. Once all five sections are complete, they are seamed together and finished with a simple crochet border to create the final cozy blanket. The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket is crocheted double stranded, meaning two strands of yarn are held and worked together at the same time, creating a thicker, softer, and beautifully squishy fabric.

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS for The Take-Along Crochet Blanket Pattern
We used a 5mm hook for all parts of the blanket except the final edge where we used a 4.5mm hook. We double stranded our weight 2 yarn for this entire pattern except when seaming.
We highly recommend you use the Fisherman’s Knot for changing colors to minimize weaving in. If you would like to watch a cute video on how to do this watch it here on our YouTube channel.
Just a reminder, there are 5 sections crocheted separately. Four of the sections are made with a row of eight granny squares combined with two cream-colored panels, while the fifth section is made using two cream-colored panels only (no row of granny squares).
1. Crochet the Granny Squares (Make 32)
The ch3 counts as a stitch for all rounds in the Granny Square.
Start with color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
ch 5, sl st into first ch to create a ring
Round 1: ch3, 2dc in ring, ch2, (3dc in ring, ch2) 3 times, sl st into top of tch at beginning of round.
Fasten off.
Attach color 2 (eg. Cream) to a ch-2 space
Round 2: ch3, 2dc in same ch-2 sp, *ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in next ch-2 sp, rep from * 2 more times, ch1, 3dc in next ch-2 sp, ch2, sl st in top of tch at beginning of round.
Round 3: ch3, 2dc in same ch-2 sp, *ch1, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in next ch-2 sp (corner), repeat from * 2 more times, ch1, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, 3dc in next ch-2 sp, ch2, sl st in top of tch at beginning of round.
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue) to a ch-2 space
Round 4: ch3, 2dc in same ch-2 sp, * ch1, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in next ch-2 sp (corner), repeat from * 2 more times, ch1, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, [3dc, ch1] in next ch-1 sp, 3dc in next ch-2 sp, ch2, sl st in top of tch at beginning of round.
Fasten off.
You have completed one granny square and need a total of 32 granny squares.
2. Crochet “Section Type A” (8 Granny Squares and Two Cream Sections) – Make 4

Seam 8 granny squares together side by side in a row using a single thread of color 1. You can seam the 8 granny squares using either a whip stitch with a yarn needle (worked through the outer loops for a nearly invisible, flat join) or a slip stitch join with a crochet hook (worked through back loops only for a sturdy seam with a subtle ridge).
Move back to double strands (if double stranding like us) and attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue) to the top side of the Granny Square row.
Row 1 (see tip below first): ch2 (does not count as a st), crochet 136 hdcs evenly across the entire row of 8 granny squares. We achieved this by crocheting 17 hdcs per granny square (we crocheted 1hdc in 1st st (or space if too tight), *1hdc in next 3st (3hdc per cluster), 1hdc between clusters, repeat from * 2 more times, 1hdc in next 3st, 1hdc in last st). Turn
Tip: If 136 hdcs doesn’t quite work for your dimensions, then feel free to adjust but make sure you crochet a multiple of 3 + 1. Make sure you keep your half double crochet stitches even and equal to the width of one stitch (approx)
Fasten off.
Attach color 3 (eg. Silver Grey)
Row 2: ch2 (counts as a st and from hereon in this section), hdc in 2nd st, hdc across the row, hdc in last st. Turn
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
Row 3: ch2, hdc in 2nd st, hdc across the row, hdc in top of tch. Turn
Fasten off.
Attach color 2 (eg. Cream)
Row 4: ch2, 2dc in 1st st, sk next 2st, *[1sc, 2dc] in next st, sk next 2st, rep from * towards the end of row ending with 1sc in top of tch. Turn
Row 5: ch1 (counts as a st – may want to add SM to help mark end of row), 2dc in 1st st, sk next 2dc, *[1sc, 2dc] in next st, sk next 2st, rep from * towards the end of row ending with 1sc in top of tch. Turn
Row 6 – 12: Repeat row 5
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
Row 13: ch2, hdc in 2nd st, hdc in each st across the row, hdc in top of tch. Turn
Fasten off.
Attach color 3 (eg. Silver Grey)
Row 14: Repeat row 13
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
Row 15: Repeat row 13
Fasten off.
Attach color 2 (eg. Cream)
Row 16 – 27: Repeat Rows 4 – 15
Fasten off.
You have now completed one of “Section Type A” that includes 8 granny squares and two “cream panels”. You will need to crochet a total of 4 x “Section Type As”.
3. Crochet “Section Type B” (Two Cream Panels with No Granny Squares) – Make 1
Use color 2 (eg. Cream)
Ch 136 (see note below).
Note: if you crocheted something different across your 8 granny squares in the previous section (see “Tip” in the section above) then that is what you should crochet now.
Row 1: ch2 (counts as a st and hereon), 2dc in 3rd ch from hook, sk next 2st, *[1sc, 2dc] in next st, sk next 2st, rep from * towards the end of row ending with 1sc in last st. Turn
Row 2: ch1 (counts as a sc), 2dc in 1st st, sk next 2dc, *[1sc, 2dc] in next st, sk next 2st, rep from * towards the end of row ending with 1sc in top of tch. Turn
Row 3 – 9: repeat row 2
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
Row 10: ch2, hdc in 2nd st, hdc in each st across the row, hdc in top of tch. Turn
Fasten off.
Attach color 3 (eg. Silver Grey)
Row 11: Repeat row 10
Fasten off.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue)
Row 12: Repeat row 10
Fasten off.
Attach color 2 (eg. Cream)
Row 13 – 24: Repeat Rows 1 – 12 in that order
Fasten off.
You have now completed one of “Section Type B” that includes two “cream panels” with no granny squares.
Assembling The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket
You should now have 5 separate sections: 4 x “Section Type A” and 1 x “Section Type B”.
Block all 5 sections so that the widths are all similar. We like to pin everything to an old yoga mat and spray with water.
Using color 1 yarn (single stranded), seam together the last row of each section to the base of the granny square row in the next section using matching yarn and the mattress stitch. If you find it easier to line up the stitches for seaming, you can first work 136 single crochets across the base of the granny square row (or the same number of stitches you worked across the top of your granny squares) in color 1 yarn. Repeat until all sections are seamed together.
Crochet a Border around The Take-Along Granny Square Crochet Blanket
Use the smaller hook.
Attach color 1 (eg. Dutch Blue) yarn at the start of a long edge (double stranded).
Tip: In Round 1, you will be crocheting many hdc stitches evenly around the blanket. We crocheted 749 stitches around, however feel free to adjust this number as long as it is a multiple of 4 + 1. Use a stitch marker at every 20 stitches in case you lose count. You may want to use this border to help weave in some of the ends/knots from the rows.
Round 1: ch2 (does not count as a st), hdc a total of 749 stitches evenly around the four sides of your blanket (or a multiple of 4 +1). When you come to the corners, hdc in your last stitch for that side, ch2 (counts as a st), hdc back into the same stitch and continue. When you come to the end of the round, hdc in your last stitch, ch1, sl st to join to the top of tch (ch1 & sl st counts as a st).
Round 2: ch1 (does not count as a st), sc in 1st st, *sk 1 st, 5dc in next st, sk 1 st, 1sc in next st, rep from * all the way around the blanket, ending with a sl st to join at the beginning of round.
Fasten off.
